The University of São Paulo (USP) announced the opening of numerous spots in free courses offered by the institution. According to the entity, these opportunities are part of the USP 60+ program.
In total, four thousand spots are offered for the USP 60+ program, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary and is open for enrollment until February 20 for the first semester of 2024.
As stated on the USP website, all activities offered by the institution are free. In this sense, it is important to highlight that interested individuals do not need to have a connection to the university. The only requirement for enrollment is to be 60 years old or older.

The initiative, created by the Pro-Rectorate of Culture and University Extension (PRCEU) at USP, has reached its 57th edition. Today, the program is conducted in the capital and in campuses in the interior, providing more than the 4,000 spots mentioned.
These opportunities are divided between regular subjects offered in USP’s undergraduate courses and complementary activities. The latter include courses, lectures, excursions, sports practices, and educational-cultural activities.
The USP course, active since 1994, offers more than 200 activities divided into various fields of knowledge, such as:
- Audiovisual Production;
- Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous Culture and Education;
- Advertising Writing;
- Tax Law;
- Introduction to Computer Programming;
- Social Psychology;
- Physiology of Motor Activity;
- Fiscal Policy.
According to the USP website, these are just examples of the regular subjects taught at the various campuses of USP, in addition to extension courses, such as balance sheet analysis, clinical pharmacology, language courses, and herbarium plant assembly.
Also on the site, Dr. Egidio Lima Dórea, a nephrology PhD from USP and coordinator of the USP 60+ program of free courses, explains that one of the relevant factors for aging well is the meeting of generations.
“We innovate by adding intergenerationality, this exchange of experiences within the classroom with undergraduate students”, he states, adding:
“The idea of the USP 60+ program is to provide the population over 60 years old with opportunities for lifelong learning. We know that this is one of the main characteristics for having a healthy aging process”, he concludes.
