When it begins commercial operation in early 2020, UTE Porto de Sergipe I will be the largest thermoelectric plant in operation in Brazil.

The Porto de Sergipe I Thermoelectric Plant performed the first ignition of the turbine using gas on December 6, a procedure known as First Fire. Eneva makes giant gas discovery in the Parnaíba Basin and company stocks soar.

Continuing the commissioning phase, the synchronization of the first gas turbine took place last Monday, December 16.

The forecast is that nominal power, which is 343 MW, will be reached at the start of next week. The energy generation from the first turbine will be enough to supply 1.5 million people.

When it begins commercial operation in early 2020, UTE Porto de Sergipe I will be the largest thermoelectric plant in operation in Brazil, with a total capacity of over 1500MW, with the ability to generate energy to serve 16 million people.

CELSE – Centrais Elétricas de Sergipe S.A congratulated everyone involved in this phase. “We congratulate everyone involved in this phase!”, said the company in a statement through its official news outlet last Saturday, the 21st.

The CELSE – Centrais Elétricas de Sergipe is responsible for the implementation of the largest and most efficient natural gas thermoelectric plant in Latin America: UTE Porto Sergipe I.

The company, created in September 2015 by EBRASIL – Eletricidade do Brasil – and Golar Power (a joint venture between Norwegian Golar LNG and American investment fund Stone Infrastructure Partners), will generate and sell electricity from thermoelectric gas generating units.

UTE Porto Sergipe I will begin commercial operation in January 2020. The fuel used will be liquefied natural gas, a more effective and less polluting solution compared to diesel and coal, as it reduces gas emissions by up to 90%. The plant will have a capacity equivalent to 15% of the energy demand in the Northeast, with a capacity of 1,551 MW.

With an investment of R$ 5 billion in cutting-edge technology, the project, located in the Termoelectric Complex Porto de Sergipe I in Barra dos Coqueiros, a municipality in the Metropolitan Region of Aracaju (SE), will generate 2,500 direct jobs during construction, in addition to boosting the socioeconomic development of the region.
