FSRU Wilhelmshaven Hired Van Oord to Build a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit Dock in Wilhelmshaven.
Wilhelmshaven is becoming an important hub for the natural gas industry, with the construction of a floating unit for storage and regasification (FSRU) by FSRU Wilhelmshaven, formed by Engie and Tree Energy Solution (TES). The Dutch company Van Oord has been hired to build a dock for the FSRU in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, as part of this innovative project.
With the construction of the FSRU Wilhelmshaven dock, the necessary infrastructure for processing liquefied natural gas will be available in Wilhelmshaven. Van Oord will be responsible for the installation of monopiles to accelerate the construction process, with a total of ten monopiles being deployed, including abrasion protection. This investment will be crucial for expanding natural gas import capabilities in the region, promoting economic growth and energy security.
FSRU Wilhelmshaven Project: Foundations and Dock Dredging
The foundations are equipped with platforms, walkways, and fittings. In addition, a suction dredger is being deployed to dredge the dock pocket and turning basin, Van Oord explained.

FSRU Wilhelmshaven and the LNG Acceleration Law
The dock is part of the second project based on the FSRU in Wilhelmshaven, supported by the German LNG Acceleration Law, which was approved in May 2022 to address the supply gap and reinforce the country’s supply security.
The project is operated by the state-owned Deutsche Energy Terminal (DET), a 100% government-owned subsidiary that commenced commercial operations on January 16, 2023.
DET holds the chartering contracts and is responsible for the technical and commercial operations of the floating LNG terminals leased by the state in Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbüttel, Stade, and Lubmin.
Commissioned Floating Terminal and Towage Suppliers
The first floating terminal in Germany for LNG import in Wilhelmshaven was officially commissioned for service on December 17, 2022, after ten months of work.
DET recently selected Fairplay Towage Group as the towage provider for the floating LNG terminals in Brunsbüttel, Stade, and Wilhelmshaven.
