Woodside Preserves Spot for Australian Mariners Through Agreement with Australian Institute for Maritime Employment and Strategic Skills.

A new agreement has been reached between Woodside Energy and three Australian maritime unions, ensuring the presence of an Australian crew on a LNG vessel. This partnership reinforces the company’s commitment to local workforce and the maritime industry in the region.

The commitment of Woodside to Australian mariners and the industry is evident in the agreement established with the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union – Maritime Union of Australia Division; the Australian Institute of Marine and Energy Engineers; and the Australian Maritime Officers Union. This partnership demonstrates the company’s importance in maintaining a local crew, ensuring quality and expertise in its operations.

The Woodside Agreement Supports Australian Maritime Employment

The agreement will support the employment of about 70 mariners residing in Australia on a LNG carrier from Woodside’s chartered fleet. The crew will be hired by the ship’s contracted crew manager, ASP Ship Management Pty Ltd, based in Melbourne.

Maritime Cooperation at Woodside Facilities

Under the agreement, maritime unions will fully cooperate with Woodside and its contractors in maintaining maritime operations at Woodside’s facilities which operated the Northern Platform Project and Pluto LNG Project.

Development of Strategic Maritime Skills

The ongoing investment in the development of strategic maritime skills covers the period from April 2024 until the end of March 2029 and establishes a path for a more lasting relationship, subject to the realization of Woodside’s aspirations to expand its LNG operations in Australia.

Woodside CEO Highlights Importance of the Agreement

Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill stated that the agreement would support the supply security that underpins Woodside’s global reputation as a reliable supplier of LNG while also providing job opportunities for Australian mariners based in Australia.

‘This agreement reflects our mutual interest with the unions to ensure ongoing opportunities for employment in all aspects of the LNG industry, including maritime transport, and acknowledges the Australian government’s interest in strengthening maritime supply chains‘, she said.

The National Secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia Paddy Crumlin said: ‘LNG shipping has provided many Australian mariners with rewarding and fulfilling jobs, working in the economic and strategic interests of all Australians for many decades. The skills and job base that the LNG trade provides to our industry cannot be underestimated, and we look forward to leveraging this and offering more Australian workers the opportunity to pursue a life at sea.’

Expansion of the Maritime Agreement

The Federal President of the Australian Institute of Marine and Energy Engineers, Martin Byrne, welcomed the agreement and said that the parties also agreed to continue good faith discussions with the intention of exploring the expansion of the agreement in future maritime operations. ‘This is an agreement that sets the foundation for future long-term cooperation in the offshore maritime sector’, he said.

Investment in Australian Maritime Professionals

The Executive Director of the Australian Maritime Officers Union, Mark Davis, said: ‘The continuity of employment for highly qualified and experienced LNG ship officers will benefit all parties of the new agreement and the opportunity for new trainees to gain international experience on gas ships will be invaluable.’
