Xiaomi released a security update for old phones that should no longer receive updates.
Even after officially ending support for some smartphones, Xiaomi began distributing a new update focused on the security of these devices. The package started reaching models considered outside the regular update cycle, including devices from the Xiaomi 12 line, which already have end-of-life status within the manufacturer’s policy.
According to TecMundo, the release drew attention because phones classified as EOL (End of Life) — which means the official end of the device’s useful life — usually stop receiving any type of update. This time, however, the Chinese company decided to send a technical patch to fix possible system vulnerabilities.
Xiaomi keeps devices without new features
Despite the new distribution, the smartphones covered will not return to the brand’s traditional support calendar.

The update provided does not include:
- new functions;
- visual changes;
- recent versions of Android;
- interface improvements.
The update focuses exclusively on digital security. According to TecMundo, the goal is to fix flaws that could facilitate virtual attacks or unauthorized access to data stored on the devices.
List includes popular models
Among the covered devices are phones from the Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco lines.
Check out the models that started receiving the patch:
- Xiaomi 11i;
- Xiaomi 12;
- Xiaomi 12 Pro;
- Redmi K60e;
- Redmi Note 11 Pro+;
- Poco F4;
- Poco F4 GT.
All these devices had already been classified by the manufacturer as products outside the active update cycle.

Update is considered important
Although the installation is optional, the recommendation is that users perform the procedure to increase system protection.
Security patches usually fix vulnerabilities that can be exploited by:
- hackers;
- malicious programs;
- digital scams;
- data breaches.
Xiaomi did not specify which issues were resolved in this specific update. Nevertheless, the expectation is that the fix involves failures considered relevant by the company.
Even without installing the package, phones will continue to function normally. However, not updating may increase risks related to the security of personal information stored on the device.
Xiaomi adopts unusual measure for EOL devices
In the smartphone market, it is rare for manufacturers to send updates to devices that have already been officially retired.
Generally, exceptions occur only when companies identify critical vulnerabilities capable of affecting many users.

In this case, Xiaomi chose to provide a fix even after the regular support of the involved devices had ended.
Despite this, the status of the devices has not changed. The models remain classified as obsolete within the company’s update policy and will not receive future updates related to the operating system or new features.
