Yamaha FZ-S FI V4 draws attention in India with traction control, connected dashboard, low consumption, and a rare technological package for entry-level urban motorcycles.

Yamaha continues to expand its line of urban motorcycles in India, and one of the models that currently stands out is the FZ-S FI V4, a 149 cc street bike that combines aggressive looks, low consumption, connectivity, and even traction control in a category that usually offers much simpler packages. The model is sold in the Indian market with an initial price range of ₹1.20 lakh, which is approximately R$ 7,000 in direct conversion, without Brazilian taxes, freight, or import costs. Even being considered an affordable motorcycle in that market, the FZ-S FI V4 delivers a combination of technology and efficiency that stands out when compared to the Brazilian entry-level segment.

The FZ-S FI V4 uses a 149 cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine with Yamaha’s Blue Core technology. According to official manufacturer data, the set delivers approximately 12.4 hp of power and torque close to 13.3 Nm, working together with a five-speed manual transmission.

The focus is clearly not on extreme performance. The proposal of the FZ-S FI V4 is to be an efficient, economical, and comfortable urban motorcycle for intense daily use.

Extremely low consumption of the FZ-S FI V4 became one of the motorcycle’s biggest attractions

One of the points that most attracts attention in the model is precisely the consumption. Indian platforms specialized in motorcycles point to averages close to 45 to 60 km/l depending on usage conditions and riding. Together with the 13-liter tank, this allows for extremely high autonomy for an urban street bike.

In practice, the motorcycle can travel hundreds of kilometers without the need for frequent refueling, a feature highly valued in markets where fuel and daily commuting have a huge impact on the motorcyclist’s budget.

The relatively low weight, close to 136 kg, also greatly aids in the motorcycle’s urban proposal.

Traction control in a low-displacement motorcycle drew attention in the FZ-S FI V4

Perhaps the most curious detail of the FZ-S FI V4 is the presence of traction control. This type of feature usually appears in larger and more expensive motorcycles, but Yamaha decided to incorporate the system in this compact Indian street bike as well.

Traction control helps reduce rear wheel slip during sudden accelerations or on slippery surfaces, something uncommon in bikes of this range.

Additionally, the model also received:

  • disc brake;
  • ABS;
  • full LED lighting;
  • and a fully digital panel.

Yamaha strongly invested in smartphone connectivity

Another important feature of the FZ-S FI V4 is the Y-Connect system.

The bike can connect to the smartphone via Bluetooth and allows access to:

  • notifications;
  • battery status;
  • maintenance alerts;
  • consumption history;
  • location;
  • and riding data.

This type of integration quickly began to gain popularity in the Indian market because manufacturers realized that many young consumers started to value embedded technology even in small bikes.

The look of the FZ-S FI V4 tries to bring the bike closer to larger models

Despite the relatively low displacement, Yamaha worked hard on the model’s design.

The FZ-S FI V4 received:

  • muscular tank;
  • aggressive lines;
  • modern lighting;
  • and a posture inspired by the brand’s larger naked models.

The result makes the bike appear more robust than what is usually expected from a low-displacement urban street bike.

A large part of Yamaha’s strategy seems to be precisely to try to deliver a premium appearance without significantly raising the final cost.

India has become one of the most advanced markets in the world for small motorcycles

The case of the FZ-S FI V4 helps to show how the Indian market has changed in recent years. Manufacturers have started competing for consumers by offering:

  • low consumption;
  • sporty appearance;
  • connectivity;
  • embedded electronics;
  • and reduced operational costs.

Today, India is one of the largest motorcycle markets on the planet and practically functions as a global laboratory for affordable urban motorcycles.

This has led brands like Yamaha, Honda, Bajaj, TVS, and Hero to start launching increasingly sophisticated small motorcycles.

Compatibility with E20 fuel has also become a highlight

Another important technical detail is that the FZ-S FI V4 has already been prepared to operate with E20 fuel, a mixture containing up to 20% ethanol.

This measure is part of the Indian government’s strategy to expand the use of biofuels and reduce dependence on imported oil.

The FZ-S FI V4 shows a silent transformation in the motorcycle market

For many years, small motorcycles were seen only as simple basic transportation vehicles. Now, low-displacement urban models are starting to receive features that previously appeared only in much higher categories.

Traction control, connectivity, full LED lighting, digital panels, and electronic management are already becoming common in affordable motorcycles in some Asian markets.

And the Yamaha FZ-S FI V4 may be one of the clearest examples of this change: a relatively cheap urban motorcycle that tries to deliver a technological feel and appearance far above what is normally expected from the category.
