ZEG Biogas and COAGRO Sign Contract for the First Biogas Plant in Northern Fluminense, with Initial Production of 3.7 Million m³ Annually Starting in 2026.
A partnership has been established between ZEG Biogas and COAGRO for the construction of the first biogas plant in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro. Expected to begin operating in 2026, this plant will have an initial production capacity of 3.7 million m³ of biogas per year. The project stands out for utilizing waste from agribusiness, demonstrating a clear commitment to sustainability.
The initiative aims to transform organic waste into biogas, promoting a sustainable alternative to the use of fossil fuels. The new plant promises to integrate a source of clean and efficient fuel into the local energy matrix. This project, in addition to being a significant step towards a greener future, stands out for strengthening the regional economy and generating new job opportunities.
First Biogas Project in the State
ZEG Biogas and COAGRO have joined forces to create the first plant in the state dedicated to the production of biogas from agro-industrial waste. The established schedule for the construction of the biorefinery predicts a period of 18 months for its implementation, with the expectation that the plant will begin marketing the product to consumers in early 2026. This innovative project will mark a significant advance in renewable fuel and biogas, contributing significantly to the sustainable energy transition of the region.

Initial Capacity and Substantial Investment
The plant will arise from a partnership with an estimated initial production capacity of 3.7 million m³ of biogas annually. The construction of the biorefinery is scheduled to begin in October 2024. To achieve this goal, a considerable investment of approximately R$ 60 million will be made by ZEG Biogas. Located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, this plant will be a pioneer in the production of biogas from vinasse, a by-product generated during the production of ethanol by COAGRO. Furthermore, the process will be responsible for generating a high-quality biofertilizer.
Increase in Biogas Generation
The project includes the possibility of increasing biogas generation, should there be a greater availability of biomass. With an increase in biomass, it is possible to boost local agro-industrial production or even encourage the planting of new crops that have not yet been widely explored in the region. ‘This partnership results from mutual cooperation between companies that understand the urgency of the energy transition to a low-carbon economy,’ says Eduardo Acquaviva, CEO of ZEG Biogas. Biogas, being a clean and socially responsible fuel, will play a crucial role in positioning Brazil as a renewable energy powerhouse in the near future.
Impact of Carbon Adjustment Mechanisms at the Border
Eduardo Acquaviva also emphasizes that the Carbon Adjustment Mechanisms at the Border (CBAM) will be applied to products intended for export to the European Union starting in January 2026. The need for a clean fuel that can be economically produced to replace fossil fuels in the port region becomes essential under these conditions. ‘This could create a significant differential in establishing sustainable corridors in our economy,’ concludes the executive.
