Historic bridge removed from the rural area of Prados mobilizes Civil Police, Public Prosecutor’s Office, and residents who demand the return of the structure to the original location.
A historic railway bridge disappeared from the rural area of Prados, in Minas Gerais, turning a quiet countryside town into the scene of an unusual investigation. The structure, made of steel, was about 20 meters long, 5 meters wide, and approximately 180 years old.
According to information from the Civil Police of Minas Gerais and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Minas Gerais, the bridge was removed from a private area in early June 2026 and later found in Conceição do Ibitipoca, a district of Lima Duarte. The case is being investigated as a possible irregular removal of historical heritage, as well as involving suspicions of environmental damage.
Historic bridge of Prados was part of the old Oeste de Minas railway
The structure was not just a crossing over a stream. The bridge was part of the railway memory of Minas Gerais and was connected to the old Estrada de Ferro Oeste de Minas, an important connection route during the imperial period.

At the time, the railway helped connect cities in Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro and other strategic regions. Over the decades, many sections were deactivated, stations turned into ruins, and tracks disappeared.
Even so, the bridge remained in place for many years. Therefore, its disappearance surprised residents, cyclists, and authorities.
Steel structure disappeared from a farm frequented by cyclists
The bridge was located within a farm in the Prados region, a city about 190 kilometers from Belo Horizonte. Although the area was private, the location was known by cyclists who traveled rural trails.
Before the disappearance, images taken by cycling tourism groups showed the bridge surrounded by trees and vegetation. After its removal, the scenery changed completely.
In place of the structure, there were marks on the ground, cut trees, and signs of heavy movement. For the region’s visitors, the loss was historical, touristic, and emotional.
Investigation points to use of trucks, machines, and improvised route
The removal of the bridge drew attention due to the size of the operation. The structure was large, heavy, and could not be removed without planning.
According to the investigation cited by the authorities, signs of trucks, backhoes, and paths opened through the pasture were found. Additionally, access points were reportedly blocked with sandbanks.
There were also chainsaw marks on nearby trees. Therefore, in addition to the possible theft of property, the case began to involve suspicion of environmental crime.
Irregular sale of the bridge became the focus of the investigation
Initially, residents treated the case as a mysterious disappearance. However, the investigation advanced to a possible irregular sale of the bridge.
According to information gathered in the case, the property owner allegedly sold the structure to an antique dealer. Later, this dealer reportedly transferred the bridge to a tourist enterprise in Minas Gerais.
The main issue now is not just about who removed the bridge. The central point is to know who could sell a structure linked to railway history and possibly belonging to public heritage.
Public Prosecutor evaluates if the bridge belongs to the Union or the municipality
The Public Prosecutor of Minas Gerais is monitoring the case to determine the responsibility for the structure. The discussion involves whether the bridge belongs to the Union or the municipality.
If the investigation confirms a connection with federal heritage, the jurisdiction may reach the federal level. Otherwise, state authorities should maintain the case.
The City Hall of Prados reported that it is following the case with the responsible bodies and providing support to clarify the facts.
Bridge was found in Conceição do Ibitipoca, in Lima Duarte
After the repercussion, the authorities found the historic bridge in Conceição do Ibitipoca, a district of Lima Duarte, also in Minas Gerais. The location is about 180 kilometers from Prados.
The Military Police of Minas Gerais stated that they did not provide support or escort for the removal or transport of the bridge. The corporation made this statement after reports suggested possible use of special transport documentation and escort.
With the location of the structure, residents and cyclists began to demand the return of the bridge to its original location.
Disappearance became a symbol of historical loss in the interior of Minas
The story attracted attention because it involves a structure that spanned generations. The bridge withstood the end of the railways, the abandonment of stations, and the passage of time.
However, an operation not yet fully clarified removed the structure from its original location.
For those who frequented the region, the bridge represented more than just a crossing. It symbolized memory, rural tourism, and part of the local identity.
Now, the investigation should clarify responsibilities, identify possible irregularities, and determine the fate of the 180-year-old railway bridge.
