Swedish researchers believe perovskite LEDs could replace your home lights

The search for more efficient and sustainable energy solutions is driving the advancement of new technologies. Now, Swedish researchers believe that perovskite LEDs could replace traditional light bulbs, offering benefits such as lower energy consumption and longer lifespan.

The LEDs of perovskite are emerging as a promising alternative to traditional lights.

With reduced cost, high efficiency and a potentially lower environmental impact, these new LEDs light can change the way we light homes and electronic devices.

What Are Perovskite LEDs?

Unlike conventional LEDs, which use expensive materials such as gallium nitride, perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) are made of a mineral composed of calcium oxide and titanium.

This material is already known for its application in painéis solares, but now it is gaining prominence in lighting and electronic screens.

PeLEDs have the potential to be cheaper and easier to manufacture, and offer vibrant colors. Feng Gao, professor of optoelectronics at Linköping University, in Sweden, claims that this technology could represent the next generation of LEDs.

For PeLEDs to replace traditional LEDs, some challenges need to be overcome.

Researchers evaluated 18 different types of PeLEDs for environmental and economic reasons. The devices tested covered a range of colors, including red, green, blue, white and infrared.

The results showed that PeLEDs have similar environmental performance to organic LEDs (OLEDs). However, there are still areas for improvement, especially in relation to production and disposal.

Environmental impact

A life cycle analysis of PeLEDs revealed that the greatest environmental impact occurs in the production phase, due to electricity consumption and the use of specific substances.

Organic solvents such as acetone and isopropanol have a considerable impact on the environmental impact of manufacturing.

Experts suggest that advances in production could reduce these impacts, making PeLEDs an even more sustainable option in the future.

Lifespan

To be commercially viable, PeLEDs need to last at least 10.000 hours. Currently, the best devices only last a few hundred hours.

Muyi Zhang, a PhD student at Linköping University, says progress is being made to increase this durability.

The longevity of LEDs perovskite will be a decisive factor in their widespread adoption. If this issue is resolved, they could outperform traditional LEDs in cost and efficiency.

market potential

In addition to lighting, the PeLEDs can be used in screens of electronic devices, communications and even medical equipment.

Recent studies have shown that these LEDs can be thousands of times brighter than OLEDs, expanding their applications.

It is estimated that in the future, the cost of PeLEDs could be approximately US$100 per square meter, making them competitive with other lighting and display technologies.

With continued investment, perovskite LEDs could become the dominant choice in the market.

The study concludes that PeLEDs have great long-term commercial potential. If their useful life is extended, this technology could transform the way we use lighting in our daily lives.
