The Telecom Operator Exceeds Emission Reduction Targets Defined by Science Based Target, Demonstrating Strong Commitment to Sustainability.
Claro, a major player in the telecommunications sector, has sustainability as one of its main pillars. Throughout its trajectory, the company has been actively striving to ensure that its products and services reflect this philosophy by investing in initiatives that maximize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact. This commitment was highlighted with Claro’s adherence to the Brazil Network of the UN Global Compact in 2021.
Ecological Projects and Significant Advancements
The company has a wide portfolio of projects and programs focused on sustainability. Considering the environmental aspects of ESG, Claro has exceeded the CO2e emission reduction targets set by the global Science Based Target (SBTi) study for the América Móvil group. In Brazil, after the targets were defined, the company has already managed to avoid the emission of over 380,000 tons of CO2e. Adding all initiatives together, the total exceeds 500,000 tons of CO2e avoided.
The work goes beyond analyzing energy consumption, having started with mapping CO2e emissions. The goal was to quantify Claro’s true operational impact in order to subsequently implement actions aimed at increasing efficiency and sustainability.

The “Claro Energy” Initiative
Launched in 2017, the “Claro Energy” program is one of the company’s main initiatives aimed at sustainability. The project focuses on utilizing energy from renewable and clean sources, such as solar, hydropower, biogas, and qualified cogeneration, as well as seeking to reduce consumption across all Claro operations in Brazil.
The “Claro Energy” initiative is considered one of the largest distributed energy generation programs among private companies in the country. In 2023, the initiative is expected to achieve production of more than 1 GWh/year from renewable sources, which corresponds to 80% of the consumption of all the company’s operations in Brazil.
Operational Efficiency and Environmental Responsibility
In pursuit of efficiency, Claro invests in actions to improve its processes and consequently reduce carbon emissions. One example is the modernization of antennas, with the implementation of resources to control energy distribution according to demand and the volume of connected devices, avoiding waste.
Another important initiative is “Claro Recicla,” a program that highlights the importance of recycling and the proper disposal of electronic waste. The company provides collectors in over 2,000 stores across the country, designed for the collection and environmentally correct disposal of electronic waste. Since its creation in 2008, more than 292,000 items have been recycled, equivalent to about 72 tons of electronic waste.
Thus, Claro not only invests in internal improvements but also in initiatives that involve society, generating impact and environmental awareness among the general population. This is an example that other companies should follow in their commitment to sustainability.
