Microsoft founder to be heard by House committee investigating official documents, meetings after conviction, and possible failures of American authorities in the Epstein case.

A politically impactful investigation has regained momentum in the United States, placing Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, at the center of attention.

The billionaire is set to testify this Wednesday, June 10, before the United States House Committee on Oversight and Reform.

The committee is investigating the actions of federal authorities in the processes related to Jeffrey Epstein, a financier accused of sex trafficking of minors.

According to Reuters, Gates will participate in a private, officially recorded session amid the analysis of documents, legal agreements, and decisions made by American agencies.

Closed testimony increases pressure on the Epstein case

The committee chairman, Republican Representative James Comer, requested in March that Gates attend an in-person interview.

The hearing takes place at a time of strong scrutiny over the handling of investigations involving Epstein and his former associate, Ghislaine Maxwell.

According to The New York Times, Gates hired Jake Greenberg, former chief investigator of the committee, to assist him in preparing for the testimony.

A committee spokesperson told Reuters that Greenberg has not worked for the agency since December.

Documents reignite doubts about meetings after 2008

Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to a charge related to the sexual exploitation of minors in Florida.

At the time, he served 13 months in prison.

Years later, in 2019, federal prosecutors charged Epstein with sex trafficking of minors.

He denied the charges and died in prison before the trial.

The death was ruled a suicide by American authorities.

Documents released this year by the U.S. Department of Justice show that Gates and Epstein met several times after the 2008 conviction.

According to the records, the meetings involved discussions about possible philanthropic initiatives and social projects.

Gates Foundation also came under investigation radar

The disclosures also included photographs of Gates alongside unidentified women.

The businessman has previously stated that his relationship with Epstein was limited to conversations about philanthropy.

Even so, Gates acknowledged that it was a mistake to have maintained contact with the financier.

In February, he “took responsibility for his actions” during a meeting with employees of the Gates Foundation, according to a spokesperson for the organization heard by Reuters.

The Gates Foundation reported in April that it had initiated an external investigation into the businessman’s contacts with Epstein.

Emails released by the Department of Justice also showed exchanges of messages between Epstein and foundation employees.

Commission targets failures, agreements, and official documents

The House committee analyzes various aspects of the case, including the actions of authorities in investigations and legal proceedings.

Agreements made with defendants, Epstein’s death in prison, and possible failures in combating sex trafficking are also being investigated.

The committee investigates ethical issues and delays in the release of official documents.

The release of millions of internal records revealed Epstein’s connections with influential figures in politics, business, finance, and academia.

Among the names mentioned in the documents is Donald Trump, who had social interactions with Epstein in the 1990s and 2000s.

Political pressure grows after release of files

The former Attorney General Pam Bondi, who left office in April, was also criticized for handling issues related to the case.

Trump resisted for years the release of the files.

Subsequently, Congress passed a law mandating the release of the documents.

Now, the testimony of Bill Gates is expected to help the committee better understand the contacts maintained with Epstein and the extent of the connections revealed by the official records.

The case remains under strong public scrutiny, mainly due to the combination of influential figures, sensitive documents, and questions about the response of American authorities.
