Published on TikTok by the profile @timelapsebr on May 21, the pool in Balneário Camboriú uses a matte black coating imported from Africa, applied by hand over days. The R$ 40,000 mentioned refers only to the finishing, and the result divided opinions on the internet.

A pool with an absolute black finish has become an internet phenomenon by creating the impression that the water simply disappears. Located in a residence in Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina, it has been nicknamed the black hole in the backyard and has already surpassed 23.5 million views on social media. The depth effect is so strong that the liquid seems to merge with the dark bottom.

According to Revista PEGN, the video was posted on TikTok by the profile @timelapsebr on May 21 and shows the final stage of the work. According to the account of the professional responsible, the investment only in the coating phase would have totaled 40 thousand reais, a value explained by the choice of a matte material imported from Africa and entirely applied by hand over several days.

The black pool that seems to swallow the water

The owner’s request was quite specific from the start.

According to Revista PEGN, he wanted a tone of absolute black, without reflections, without marks, and without the common shine of conventional dark tiles or paints.

The intention was to create a depth effect in which the pool water seemed aesthetically invisible.

The result impresses even before the structure is filled.

According to the professional responsible for the work, the density of the tone already altered the perception of the space’s depth, making it difficult to identify how far the bottom was under natural light.

The builder himself admitted that when he first heard the request, “I thought he was joking,” according to the published account.

The material imported from Africa applied by hand

To achieve absolute black, the team gave up common market solutions.

According to PEGN Magazine, standardized national options were discarded, and the alternative was to import a matte coating from the African continent, described as more closed and dense than traditional materials.

This choice, according to the report, increased the cost of the pool’s finish.

The application required days of fully manual work.

According to the project executor, the team performed millimetric leveling of the internal surface to avoid imperfections, undulations, or scratches, which would become evident once the water was added.

The investment in this coating stage alone would have totaled 40 thousand reais, according to the professional cited by the publication.

The black hole effect has an explanation related to light.

An extremely matte and dark finish absorbs most of the light and eliminates the reflections that normally help the eye perceive where the surface and the bottom of the pool are.

Without these reference points, the water seems to merge with the coating, creating an almost infinite depth sensation.

This same extreme aesthetic, however, raises practical doubts.

Very dark surfaces tend to absorb more heat under the sun, a point noted by those who watched the video, as well as the possibility of dirt being more apparent.

These are issues related to daily use, not to the visual impact, which is precisely what made the pool famous.

23.5 million views and divided opinions

The project’s repercussion was immediate and significant.

According to PEGN Magazine, the video posted on TikTok by the profile @timelapsebr has already surpassed 23.5 million views.

The combination of the eccentricity of the choice and the reported cost ended up dividing the platform’s users.

In the comments, opposing opinions accumulated.

On one side, part of the audience questioned the pool’s functionality, with doubts about the water’s heat under the sun and maintenance, and some said they would find the space dirty.

On the other hand, people were impressed with the visual result and praised the quality of the execution, in a debate that helped to further boost the video’s reach.

The black pool in Balneário Camboriú shows how a bold aesthetic choice can become an internet phenomenon.

Between admiration and criticism, the project drew attention for transforming the water into something that seems to disappear, thanks to imported cladding and a lot of manual work.

It is worth remembering that the values and the origin of the material come from the account of those who carried out the work, disclosed in the video.

And you, would you put such a black pool in your backyard or do you think the effect is not worth it in practice? Did you find the result impressive or exaggerated?
