Brazil’s Crude Steel Production Rose Compared to the Same Period Last Year. However, Exports Declined
Brazil’s crude steel production reached 2.6 million tons in September, an increase of 7.5% compared to the same month last year. September exports were 756 thousand tons, or US$ 379 million, resulting in a decrease of 20.9% and 27.4%, respectively, compared to the same month in 2019.

Flattened product production was 1.9 million tons, 2.6% lower than the production in September 2019. The production of semi-finished products for commercialization was 456 thousand tons, a decrease of 31.9% compared to the same period last year.
Compared to September 2019, domestic sales increased by 11.8% to 1.8 million tons. The apparent consumption of steel products was 1.9 million tons, an increase of 8.2% compared to the same period in 2019.

The volume exported in September was 756 thousand tons or US$ 379 million, a reduction of 20.9% and 27.4% compared to the same month in 2019. In 2020, it will be 142 thousand tons, US$ 171 million, a reduction of 22.9%.
Regarding production in the domestic market, steel production fell by 4.7% compared to August, mainly due to a decline in the production of semi-finished products. Domestic sales in September significantly increased by 7.1% compared to the previous month, confirming the rapid and strong recovery of the domestic market.
Marco Polo de Mello Lopes, CEO of the Institute Aço Brasil, stated that “Domestic sales of flattened products in September were 15.5% above the average sales that occurred in 2018 and 2019. Thus, the speculations that there would be a supply shortage in the domestic market due to the delay in restarting the sector’s blast furnaces and the increase in exports are unfounded.”
