Brazil and US move forward in talks on nuclear energy

On the trip to the United States scheduled for March, President Jair Bolsonaro will have elements to resume a subject discussed in last year's visit.

A signed letter of intent on February 3rd by the Brazilian state-owned company Eletronuclear and by Westinghouse, a US company, took the first step towards cooperation between the two countries to extend the useful life of the Angra 1 nuclear power plant.

The document was signed during a meeting in Rio de Janeiro of the Brazil-US Energy Forum, created when Bolsonaro was in Washington.

“The Forum focuses on cooperation in oil and gas, civil nuclear energy, and energy and electrical efficiency,” explained the press office for the US Embassy in Brasilia. During the meeting, a memorandum of understanding was also signed between the US Electric Energy Institute – an association of private sector companies – and the Brazilian Association for the Development of Nuclear Activities (ABDAN) to expand cooperation in the area in the coming years.
