Drop in demand for traditional product led to the closure of the unit
According to information released by The Wall Street Journal, the New Britain factory was responsible for producing the traditional one-sided yellow and black tape measures, one of Stanley’s most recognized products over the past decades.
However, demand for this model has significantly decreased in recent years. According to the company, consumers have started to prefer more modern versions, with printing on both sides of the tape measure, offering greater convenience for professional and domestic use.
Currently, these double-sided tape measures are produced in Thailand, where the company already has structures adapted for this type of manufacturing.
The change in market profile ended up reducing the competitiveness of the North American unit, which operated with a production model developed to meet a demand that no longer represents the majority preference of consumers.
Furthermore, Stanley considered the possibility of converting the Connecticut plant to manufacture the more modern models. However, technical barriers and operational limitations prevented the adaptation from being implemented in an economically viable way.

In an interview with NBC Connecticut, a spokesperson for Stanley Black & Decker stated that the company is taking measures to mitigate the impact of the decision on affected workers.
According to the company, employees will have access to professional transition programs, opportunities in other units of the organization, severance packages, and job market relocation services.
“We are focused on supporting affected employees during this transition, including providing job options in other units, severance, and professional relocation support services for salaried and hourly employees,” the company representative stated.
Despite the announced measures, the news provoked a strong reaction among union representatives and local community members, who see the closure as a significant loss for the regional economy.
Union criticizes decision and warns of community impacts
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) publicly expressed its dissatisfaction with the closure of the factory’s operations.
In a statement, the entity classified the decision as disappointing and highlighted the impacts that the measure could have on both the workers and the city of New Britain.
According to the union, hundreds of professionals dedicated years — in many cases decades — of their careers to the company, contributing to building the brand’s reputation in the global market.
The entity also emphasized that the local community supported Stanley for generations and that the closure of the unit represents a significant change for the region.
