The journey covers approximately 2,000 kilometers between Santa Catarina and Mato Grosso.
Baby lived for about three decades in the park’s former zoo. Her fate, however, remained undefined since the closure of the space in 2024.
2,000-kilometer journey requires special operation
Baby travels inside an adapted container, prepared to ensure safety throughout the journey.
The equipment was specially organized to meet the elephant’s needs during the trip.
The officials responsible for the transfer did not disclose the planned stop locations along the route.
The decision to keep the route confidential was made for safety reasons.
The transport will continue until the elephant arrives at the sanctuary located in Chapada dos Guimarães.
Main details of the transfer
- Approximate route of 2,000 kilometers;
- departure from Beto Carrero World, in Santa Catarina;
- destination to the Elephant Sanctuary Brazil, in Mato Grosso;
- transport in adapted container;
- stop locations kept confidential.
Baby arrived at Beto Carrero at just two years old
Baby’s story at Beto Carrero World began when she was just two years old.
The elephant remained there for almost her entire life, spending approximately three decades at the Santa Catarina park.
The zoo ceased its animal-related activities in 2024.
The former inhabitants of the space then began to be relocated to other places.
Baby was the only resident of the zoo whose fate was not immediately decided.
The situation began to be discussed judicially after the closure of the space.
Judicial decision defined the elephant’s future
Judge Douglas Braida de Moraes analyzed Baby’s fate on June 2, 2026.
The magistrate rejected the proposal to send the elephant to Animália Park, located in Cotia, São Paulo.
The decision determined the transfer of Baby to the Elephants Sanctuary Brazil, in Mato Grosso.
No case of mistreatment was found against the elephant at Beto Carrero World, as recorded in the decision.
The judge considered, nevertheless, that the sanctuary could provide more suitable living conditions for the animal.
The transport operation was organized to comply with the court’s determination.
Sanctuary is dedicated exclusively to the care of elephants
The Elephants Sanctuary Brazil is located in an area in Chapada dos Guimarães.
The institution is presented as the first sanctuary in Latin America dedicated exclusively to the care of these animals.
The space receives elephants that previously lived in circuses and zoos.
The SEB confirmed, in a publication on its own site, that its transport team was on the way to pick up Baby.
The institution stated that the elephant will have space, care, and greater autonomy in the new home.
The arrival at the sanctuary represents a new stage after almost three decades of staying at the Santa Catarina park.
Sandro may also be taken to the sanctuary
Another elephant may be sent to the Elephants Sanctuary Brazil in the future.
Information released by the Globo portal indicates that Sandro should be transferred to the same space.
The animal is identified as the only male Asian elephant in Brazil.
Sandro has lived for more than four decades at the Sorocaba Zoo, located in the interior of São Paulo.
No date for the possible transfer of the elephant has been presented so far.
What changes in the life of the elephant Baby?
Baby will leave the environment where she lived for almost her entire journey.
The new home is exclusively for elephants that spent part of their lives in zoos or circuses.
The transfer also ends a dispute initiated after the closure of the Beto Carrero World zoo in 2024.
The court decision finally determined the fate of the only elephant that remained in the old space.
