With tensile strength of 8 gigapascals, density four times lower than steel, and initial production estimated at 100 tons per year, the T1200 carbon fiber advances in China and gains relevance for sectors such as aerospace, defense, and advanced energy.
The T1200 carbon fiber has reached industrial scale in China with an initial capacity of 100 tons per year, expanding the supply of a material that combines 8 gigapascals of tensile strength and density four times lower than steel.
T1200 carbon fiber enters a new phase
The announcement came from the China National Building Material Group, CNBM. The company claims to have achieved the world’s first industrial scale capacity for this type of carbon fiber, previously limited to small volumes.
The technology is led by the subsidiary Zhongfu Shenying. To demonstrate the material, the company used a cable less than two millimeters thick, made up of about 120,000 filaments, to pull a double-decker bus.

Strength surpasses steel with less weight
The T1200 carbon fiber consists of thousands of individual strands, each only a few microns in diameter. Its tensile strength reaches 8 gigapascals, while structural steel rarely exceeds 1 gigapascal.
The T1200 has a quarter of the density of steel, a feature that expands its use in areas where every kilogram influences performance.
Compared to the previous generation, the T1100 carbon fiber, the T1200 offers 14% greater tensile strength. Weight reduction can reach about 10% in advanced applications.
Manufacturing requires extreme control
Production begins with the polymerization of polyacrylonitrile, PAN, and continues through the oxidation and carbonization stages. In these phases, temperatures can exceed 2,000 °C.
The process requires precision to reduce microscopic defects in the fiber’s internal structure, a critical step because flaws can compromise the material’s performance.
Japanese company Toray Industries was the first to produce the T1200 in 2023. The Chinese advancement does not eliminate complexity or cost but indicates scale for aerospace, defense, and advanced energy.
