The former Northeast factory, located in the Camaçari Industrial Complex, in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador – Bahia, was reopened last Wednesday, 3rd. The Northeast Fertilizer Factory (Fafen) was acquired by the Unigel Group in 2020, the The unit received around BRL 95 million in investments, generating around 500 direct and indirect jobs for Camaçari.

The governor of the state of Bahia, Rui Costa, participated in the reopening ceremony of Fafen. Rui Costa highlighted that Fafen is of paramount importance not only for the Northeast region, but also for Brazil. This will make the country one of the four largest food producers globally.
The governor of Bahia stated that the biggest food producers are those that produce in their countries more than 80% of the fertilizers they need and Brazil is the only one that produces only about 20% of fertilizers.
From Rui's strategic point of view, it is extremely important for the Brazilian nation to invest and increase fertilizer production, something that will bring more control and power to the country.
Other projects planned for the state of Bahia
The founder of Unigel, Henri Slezynger, spoke during the event and said that the company intends to invest very soon in the first green ammonia factory in Brazil.
Henri has already decided that the green ammonia plant will be built in Camaçari and, according to the company's planning, the forecast is that the factory's operations will start by the end of 2022. In addition to Fafen in Bahia, the multinational Grupo Unigel also bought the Fafen manufacturing unit, located in Sergipe.
The two plants together will have the capacity to produce up to 925 thousand tons of ammonia, more than 1,125 million tons of urea and around 320 thousand tons of ammonium sulfate per year.

The Unigel Group is currently considered the largest producer of acrylic and styrenic materials in Latin America, with plants in São Paulo and now in Bahia, with the Fafen manufacturing unit. The Camaçari unit has an annual installed capacity of 160 thousand tons of styrene, 15 thousand tons of polycarbonate, 95 thousand tons of acrylonitrile, 12 thousand tons of sodium cyanide, 6 thousand tons of toluene and 3 thousand tons of acetonitrile.
The styrene produced at the Camaçari plant is also used as the base raw material for the large-scale production of polystyrene at the manufacturing units in São José dos Campos and Guarujá, in São Paulo.
Going to the Northeast, in Bahia, the multinational also has a manufacturing unit installed in Candeias, which has an annual capacity of 20 thousand tons of acrylic resins, about 400 thousand tons of ammonium sulfate and also 90 thousand tons of methacrylate, also known as MMA. The production of ammonium sulfate is mainly used in fertilizers, while MMA is used in the manufacture of plastic materials and synthetic rubber.
