Reopening of Fafen in Camaçari, Bahia, Promises to Generate Great Opportunities for Professionals in the Region. Job Openings Will Be Available Soon
The old factory of the Northeast, located in the Camaçari Industrial Pole, in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador – Bahia, reopened last Wednesday, the 3rd. The Northeast Fertilizer Factory (Fafen) was acquired by the Unigel Group in 2020, and the unit received around R$ 95 million in investments, generating approximately 500 direct and indirect job openings in Camaçari.

Other Projects Planned for the State of Bahia
The founder of Unigel, Henri Slezynger, spoke at the event and said that the company intends to invest very soon in Brazil’s first green ammonia factory.
Henri has already decided that the green ammonia manufacturing unit will be built in Camaçari and, according to the company’s planning, operations at the factory are expected to start by the end of 2022. In addition to Fafen in Bahia, the multinational Unigel Group also purchased the Fafen plant located in Sergipe.
The two plants combined will have the capacity to produce up to 925,000 tons of ammonia, over 1.125 million tons of urea, and about 320,000 tons of ammonium sulfate annually.

The Unigel Group is currently considered the largest producer of acrylic and styrenic materials in Latin America, with plants in São Paulo and now in Bahia, with the Fafen manufacturing unit. The Camaçari unit has an installed capacity of 160,000 tons of styrene, 15,000 tons of polycarbonate, 95,000 tons of acrylonitrile, 12,000 tons of sodium cyanide, 6,000 tons of toluene, and 3,000 tons of acetonitrile annually.
The styrene produced at the Camaçari factory is also used as a base raw material for large-scale production of polystyrene at the manufacturing units in São José dos Campos and Guarujá, in São Paulo.
Moving to the Northeast, in Bahia, the multinational also has a manufacturing unit installed in Candeias, which has an annual capacity of 20,000 tons of acrylic resins, about 400,000 tons of ammonium sulfate, and also 90,000 tons of methacrylate, also known as MMA. The production of ammonium sulfate is mainly used in fertilizers, while MMA is used in the manufacture of plastic materials and synthetic rubber.
