So far, women could only join the Brazilian Army through preparatory schools or public competitions, working in areas such as health, logistics and maintenance of weapons and vehicles. With the new decision, they will be able to enlist directly, just like men.
The inclusion of women in the Armed Forces began in the 1980s, but always in a limited way. Now, with female enlistment, a gradual increase in the female contingent is expected. The Minister of Defense, José Múcio, stated that the initial expectation is for 20% of the total vacancies to be reserved for women. However, female enlistment will be voluntary, not mandatory, as it is for men.
