Cooking Gas Is One of the Essential Products for Brazilian Families, and Its Price Has Been Radically Adjusted Several Times Throughout 2021. To Assist Low-Income Families, the Federal Government Created the Gas Voucher, a Subsidy That Represents Half the Price of the Product
The law that establishes the Gas Voucher was sanctioned by President Jair Bolsonaro. Thus, the new program will offer financial assistance to families in social vulnerability for the purchase of cooking gas. The Gas Voucher does not yet have a precise calendar for when payments will begin, however, it is estimated that it will start sometime in December. For the first payment, the Ministry of Citizenship stated that R$ 300 million of its own resources will be used. For future payments, the Federal Government is awaiting the approval of the Income Tax Reform and the PEC of Precatórios to find room in the General Budget of the Union.

As a result, cooking gas now costs the equivalent of 10% of the minimum wage in 16 states. The law sanctioned by the Federal Government for the Gas Voucher guarantees payment every two months of an amount equivalent to 50% of the average price of cooking gas. Considering the current price, beneficiaries should receive about R$ 52.00.
The amount transferred will be based on the average reference price, established by the Price Survey System (SLP), of the ANP, in the six previous months.
Who Will Be Able to Receive the Federal Government’s Gas Voucher?
The new benefit will cover families in a state of social vulnerability registered in CadÚnico for Federal Government social programs. To qualify, it is necessary to have a monthly per capita family income equal to or less than half the minimum wage. Preference will also be given to families with women who are victims of domestic violence and are under the monitoring of urgent protective measures.
The projection is that around 19 million families will receive financial help in December for the purchase of cooking gas. It is important to note that the Gas Voucher will be granted for 5 years and will create an expense of approximately R$ 40 billion for the Union, a value that will be paid in 30 installments. The funds will be transferred through the structure of Auxílio Brasil, meaning through deposits into the Digital Social Savings Account.
How Will the Selection of the Gas Voucher Work?
The selection of beneficiaries will occur through the data available in CadÚnico. Thus, there will be no new registrations for the program. Registrations will be made at CREAS or CRAS by the family responsible, who should preferably be a woman over 16 years old with a CPF or voter registration. It will be necessary to fill out a form with information about the family members and themselves. Additionally, the following documents will be required:
- CPF
