Ardagh Group Prepares Announcement for Opening New Metal Packaging Plant in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais

Dutch Ardagh Group Is Investing in Minas Gerais, and the New Factory Will Occupy an Area Near Mercedes-Benz, in Juiz de Fora

The Dutch multinational Ardagh Group, headquartered in Luxembourg, will announce, together with the Juiz de Fora City Hall, during the city’s anniversary program, the establishment of its industrial unit for metal packaging, for beverage can production. The announcement will take place on the 25th of this month, at 9 AM, in the Paschoal Carlos Magno Theater, and the branch will be installed on a plot of land in the North Zone of Juiz de Fora, next to Mercedes-Benz. The event, which will be presided over by Mayor Margarida Salomão, is expected to be attended by the Governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema, who, as planned, will be accompanied by the President of the Federation of Industries of Minas Gerais (Fiemg), Flávio Roscoe.

The Ardagh Group is one of the world leaders in the production and sale of metal packaging for beverages and, at the end of September last year, opened the company Ardagh Glass Packaging Brasil Ltda., located in Juiz de Fora with a share capital of R$ 85 million. According to information obtained by Diário do Comércio, the amount invested in the arrival of the multinational in Minas Gerais will be around R$ 1 billion.

Furthermore, in July 2021, during a presentation for investors, the company had already outlined a project for a new factory in the state of Minas Gerais, with two lines: one for beverage cans and another for bottles. However, it was not disclosed in which city the project would take place. On the same occasion, the company also announced that the initiative is part of a global expansion program worth US$ 1.8 billion, which should be completed in the second half of this year.

The New Unit Will Have a Combined Annual Production of 3 Billion Cans, According to Expectations

The CEO of Ardagh Group in Brazil, Jorge Bannitz, stated at an event by the Brazilian Canned Manufacturers Association (Abralatas) that the new branch will be supplied with high-speed production lines, achieving a combined annual production of 3 billion cans. Bannitz is listed as a partner of Ardagh Glass Packaging Brasil Ltda. to be inaugurated in Juiz de Fora.

Ardagh Group currently has three production units in Brazil, including a cap factory in Manaus (AM) and can factories in Jacareí (SP) and Alagoinhas (BA). With the addition of the new unit in Juiz de Fora (Minas Gerais), there is an expectation that current production will double by 2024.

Globally, Ardagh Group operates in 12 countries, with 56 production units, where it manufactures packaging primarily for beverages, paints, food, pharmaceuticals, coatings, and aerosols. The multinational is responsible for generating over 16,000 jobs, in addition to providing a revenue of approximately 7 billion euros.

Minas Gerais Is Also Home to Other Can Factories

Ardagh Group is not the only company interested in making investments in the mining territory. In addition to the new unit of the multinational to be installed in Juiz de Fora, other municipalities in the state have also become home to new can factories.

Cervejaria Ambev, for example, inaugurated a branch in Sete Lagoas, in the central region of the state, at the end of 2020. In this venture, the invested capital was R$ 700 million, and the production capacity will reach 1.5 billion cans per year.

Finally, another example to mention is the production unit established in Frutal, in the Triângulo Mineiro, by the American company Ball Corporation. The investment in the factory exceeds R$ 500 million, while the production capacity varies from 1.6 billion to 2 billion cans per year, depending on the sizes.
