Uno, Doblo and Grand Siena Will Be Produced Only Until the End of 2021. New Legislation Drops Three Fiat Models, Just Like What Happened in 2014 with Volkswagen’s Kombi
2021 has been a nightmare year for the automotive industry, marked by production shutdowns due to the semiconductor shortage, skyrocketing prices for both new and used cars, and the farewell of several models from the Brazilian market. Additionally, the year saw Ford’s exit, which ended its vehicle production in January, as the Ka, Ka Sedan, and EcoSport said goodbye as their respective stocks ran out. Now, the multinational Fiat must cease production of the Uno, Doblo, and Grand Siena. The list keeps growing, with classics like the Gol, Voyage, and Saveiro from Volkswagen also having their days numbered in Brazil.

This is because, starting in January 2022, a new phase of Proconve, the L-7, will be in effect, and the three models from the Italian automaker will disappear due to the new environmental emission requirements, just like what happened in 2014 with the iconic Volkswagen Kombi due to the requirement for airbags and ABS brakes. Other favorites in Brazil have also retired, such as the C3 and Aircross from Citroën; Up from Volkswagen; Montana from Chevrolet; and Etios Hatch and Sedan from Toyota. As if this crisis weren’t enough, the multinational Fiat will have to suspend the production of the Uno, Doblo, and Grand Siena.

The list doesn’t stop there. According to journalist Fernando Calmon, who is a columnist for Portal AutoPapo, the “older siblings” Gol, Voyage, and Saveiro will have a reprieve until 2024, and their replacements are already in development.
The List Will Grow in the Coming Months. Check Out Four Cars That Are Running Out of Time in Brazil
Volkswagen Fox: Launched in 2003, the hatchback emerged as an alternative to the VW Gol, with a taller body, and was even exported to Europe. According to Calmon, it will no longer be offered in our market in December. The journalist also states that the “older siblings” Gol, Voyage, and Saveiro will have a reprieve until 2024, and their replacements are already in development.
Fiat Uno: The darling of Brazil, which saw its last generation launched in the country in May 2010, will cease to be manufactured in Betim (MG) on December 31. However, the compact hatch will remain for sale for a period in early 2022 while stocks last. Its farewell will be a sort of second goodbye: the first generation of the Uno, rebranded as Mille, stopped being produced at the end of 2013 and is still celebrated today.
Grand Siena: While the Fiat Argo “killed” the Palio, the arrival of the Cronos in February 2018 didn’t spell the end for the Grand Siena. The sedan derived from the Palio remains in the lineup today, available in a single version with 1.0 and 1.4 flex engine options.
Doblò: Like the Uno, the multivan will cease to be manufactured in Minas Gerais by the end of this year, continuing to be sold while stocks last. Its replacement will be the Cronos, which will get a simpler version to serve the same clientele. Launched in Brazil 20 years ago, the Doblò multivan had its last major update at the end of 2009, when it received the look it has maintained. Despite the rise of SUVs in consumer preference, the model endures as the only one in its category in Brazil.
After Chevrolet, Ford, and Volkswagen, Multinational Fiat Suspends Vehicle Production in Its Factory and Puts 1,900 Employees on Collective Vacation
After Ford’s departure from Brazil, the global supply crisis and the pandemic, which caused automaker factories like Chevrolet, Honda, Audi (Volkswagen), Scania, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, and Nissan to suspend vehicle production, have reached Fiat and the country’s automotive industry may be on the brink of collapse.
Fiat did not disclose the volume of vehicles that will not be produced, nor the models that are most impacted by this suspension. In March, the automaker also had to halt production for the same reason.
The multinationals Chevrolet, Volkswagen, and Fiat treat the incident as a suspension, not a definitive halt to production in Brazil.
