The research was conducted by Alexia Lopez from the University of Central Lancashire. In a peer-reviewed analysis based on quasar absorption data, scientists identified an almost circular structure of galaxies. It was named the Great Ring.
This formation has an approximate diameter of 1.3 billion light-years and a circumference of nearly 4.1 billion light-years. The Great Ring is located about 9.2 billion light-years away. Its position in the sky is close to where the Giant Arc had previously been identified.

The Role Of Baryon Acoustic Oscillation
One important parameter for cosmology is baryon acoustic oscillation, known by the acronym BAO. It represents a kind of “standard ruler,” with a typical scale of 150 megaparsecs, or about 490 million light-years.
The Great Ring, however, is much larger than this measurement. Furthermore, it does not exhibit the expected spherical shell shape of a BAO. This implies that the hypothesis of it being a result of this process does not hold.
The Milky Way Linked To A Larger Basin
Closer research revealed something equally intriguing. Recent reconstructions of the local flow of galaxies identified regions where matter flows toward gravitational minima, called attraction basins.
According to the new study, based on the Cosmicflows-4 catalog and within the standard cosmological model, the Milky Way is not in an independent basin from Laniakea. Instead, it is part of the immense Shapley basin.
This finding suggests that our galaxy is within a much larger dynamic capture area than previously thought. The largest basin recorded in the survey is associated with the Sloan Great Wall, already known as one of the most extensive structures.
Alexia Lopez explained: “Based on current cosmological theories, we did not think structures on this scale were possible. We might expect perhaps an extremely large structure throughout our observable universe. Neither of these two ultralarge structures is easy to explain based on our current understanding of the universe.”
Alternative Theories And Caution
Some theorists recall the hypothesis of cosmic strings, possible remnants from the primitive universe. These strings would not connect galaxies through the same mechanism as gravity but could generate unusual shapes.
Other experts emphasize that statistical errors or selection effects always need to be considered. A structure that appears striking in one data set may disappear in broader surveys.
The method used to identify the Great Ring was ingenious. The team did not rely solely on bright galaxies. Instead, it used quasar spectra to find magnesium (Mg II) absorbers. These elements indicate the presence of galaxies and groups that cannot be directly seen in images at such distances.
In this case, quasars act as background beacons. The thin matter between them and Earth leaves absorption signatures that help map the distribution. With this data, scientists constructed a three-dimensional map and applied independent significance tests.
Next Steps Of The Investigation
To confirm the existence of the Great Ring, further information will need to be collected from other surveys. Data obtained with different instruments and selection criteria may show whether the structure holds up in independent catalogs.
Another priority is to search for new similar formations in other parts of the sky. If the pattern repeats in more regions and at different distances, it will increase confidence that this is not an isolated case.
On the other hand, if no other examples emerge, it might be that the Great Ring is a rare exception. Regardless, the discovery reinforces the notion that the universe contains larger and more complex structures than previously imagined.
Impact On Cosmology
The discoveries do not signify a crisis for current science. However, they indicate that models need to be adjusted. The scale, shape, and evolution of the universe may hide more secrets.
The fact that the Milky Way is linked to a larger basin and that a structure like the Great Ring exists points to a similar path. Both suggest that the cosmos may be more organized on a large scale than simplified images reveal.
This type of result serves as a warning to scientists. Assumptions that seemed solid need to be tested with increasingly broad data. The universe may turn out to be less homogeneous than theory predicts.
