One of the railway projects in the partnership between the IDB and MInfra was approved by Ibama for the installation of the Centro-Oeste Integration Railway

The Ministry of Infrastructure – Minfra and the Inter-American Development Bank – BID signed a technical cooperation agreement to support the development of railway projects. In all, US$ 450 will be earmarked to improve the railroad modal in Brazil. According to the terms signed in the contract, instruments will be developed for the preliminary analysis of projects, in order to encourage optimization and improvements in the rail transport system. With the modernization of assets, it is expected to attract more attention from investors.

Natália Marcassa, Secretary of Development, Planning and Partnerships at MInfra, said that “The technical cooperation signed with the IDB will help us a lot in improving the regulation of railway concessions. Based on this partnership and the resources we will receive from the IDB, another important step will be taken towards strengthening the railroad modal. This is a fundamental initiative to advance with the balance of our transport matrix”.

The project will invest US$450.000, which also includes review of other financial instruments to promote greenfield and brownfield infrastructure rail projects. In addition, it includes analysis of existing research needs and risk assessment of the socioeconomic sustainability of installed systems, research on the impact of freight or passenger rail transport projects, review of federal regulations, workshops and events to promote the exchange of experiences. .

Morgan Doyle, the IDB representative in Brazil, said that “We want to help Brazil do more with less and we know that the rail sector can not only boost the economy, generating jobs and reducing logistical costs, but also contribute to the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases”.

Last week, the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) granted a license for the installation of the Centro-Oeste Integrated Railway (FICO). Therefore, from the point of view of environmental protection, these projects can start as early as next year. The extension is 383 kilometers and will connect the Araguaia Valley, a productive and developing region of Mato Grosso, with the North-South Railway, which will facilitate the flow of the crop to Santos (SP), Itaqui (MA) and, in the future, Ilhéus (BA) .
