Brazil advances in the acquisition of the assault ships HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark from the Royal Navy
Brazil wants to buy two huge warships from the UK. They will help in disaster relief and strengthen the Navy.

Brazilian Navy seeks to strengthen amphibious and humanitarian capabilities with British ships

During LAAD Defence & Security 2025, the UK confirmed its intention to sell Brazil two of the most important amphibious assault ships in its fleet, HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark. The deal, seen as strategic by the Brazilian Navy, could drastically expand the country's operational capacity in defence and humanitarian support missions.

United Kingdom officially announces intention to sell to Brazil

O british government officially confirmed its intention to sell to Brazil the amphibious assault ships HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark, both belonging to the Royal Navy's Albion class. The confirmation came during LAAD Defence & Security 2025, in Rio de Janeiro, through the signing of a Declaration of Intent that paves the way for technical and financial negotiations. According to the website Naval Power, the document was considered a milestone in cooperation between the two countries.

Commissioned in 2003 and 2005, the Albion-class ships specialize in amphibious operations, with the capacity to transport up to 405 troops and several heavy vehicles, such as Challenger 2 tanks. This class of vessel is ideal for landings in coastal areas, supporting both military operations and humanitarian missions. The sale comes amid an effort by the British Royal Navy to cut costs, which includes decommissioning these units by March 2025, as detailed by the portal UK Defense Journal.

Brazilian Navy seeks to strengthen disaster response

According to statements by Admiral Edgar Luiz Siqueira Barbosa, the assault ships HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark could be essential for rapid response to natural disasters. The Brazilian Navy sees these vessels as an effective logistical solution for situations such as floods that reached São Sebastião, in 2023, and Rio Grande do Sul, in 2024. The information was also released by Naval Power, which highlights the humanitarian role of the project.

Sale strengthens bilateral ties between Brazil and the United Kingdom

Brazil's interest in the purchase reinforces the strategic partnership between the two countries. If the deal is completed, the vessels will join the NAM Atlântico, formerly HMS Ocean, acquired from the United Kingdom in 2018. This continuity of acquisitions shows the mutual trust and operational alignment between the navies, as highlighted by UK Defense Journal in their coverage of the event.

Modernization of the Brazilian naval fleet is underway with assault ships HMS

The acquisition of the HMS assault ships is also part of the strategy to modernize the Brazilian fleet. With this acquisition, Brazil expands its naval presence in the South Atlantic and its capacity to participate in joint operations, both military and civilian. The initiative reinforces the Navy's commitment to a more robust and multifunctional presence at sea.
