In Discussions Between United States and Brazil, Issues Such as the Conflict Between Russia and Ukraine, Democracy, and Amazon Emerged
On April 25, Monday, officials from the United States Department of State held the first high-level contacts with the Government of Brazil since 2019. This time, the talks reinforced the ties between the two countries, which today constitute the two largest democracies in the Western Hemisphere, even though they have divergent views on the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
In this regard, Victoria Nuland, the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs of the United States, expressed gratitude to Brazilian diplomats for standing alongside the United States in the United Nations Security Council vote, even though President Jair Bolsonaro did not criticize Russia’s attacks on Ukraine.
According to a report from the online news outlet Info Money, the Under Secretary told reporters: “At a time when the world is in turmoil, the United States and Brazil need each other.” According to her, Russia is undermining the ideals upheld by the United States and Brazil.

In addition to the issue of the war between Russia and Ukraine, Victoria Nuland stated that the United States believes in the strong institutions that uphold Brazil’s democracy when questioned about President Jair Bolsonaro’s criticisms of the Brazilian electoral system. “We have confidence in your systems and you need to have confidence in your systems, including at the leadership level,” she added.

The Issue of the Amazon Also Came Up
Furthermore, U.S. officials expressed concern about deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest, according to Ambassador Pedro Miguel da Costa e Silva, Secretary of the Americas at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He told reporters: “They want to see concrete results.”
The ambassador stated that U.S. officials are aware of how Brazil has been dealing with deforestation and what measures it is taking to curb it. In addition, he conveyed the message that developed countries need to provide more financing and investments in sustainable development sectors – as is happening in Brazil through sustainability projects.
This concern arose from the increase in deforestation in the world’s largest tropical rainforest, which intensified during Bolsonaro’s administration and reached record rates from January to February.

Steel Prices Rising: Affected by the Conflict Between Russia and Ukraine, Brazilian Steelmakers Increase Product Prices, Which May Reach an Increase of Up to 10%
Due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the global market has been affected in various ways, one of which is the rise in steel prices. Thus, Brazilian steelmakers have also followed international steel prices. According to area specialists, Gerdau’s rebar prices in Brazil increased by 6% to 9%. Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) will implement increases of between 8% to 10% by early April at the latest. So far, Usiminas has not announced changes, but it is likely to follow suit.
Gerdau’s increase follows an equation of similarity with significantly reduced imports, over 20%, compared to balance levels of 5%. Earlier this week, a report was published by BTG Pactual where analysts Caio Greiner and Leonardo Correa stated that long steel prices were lower compared to parity for a long time, indicating that demand conditions remained weak.
