Federal Government Reveals Goals To Neutralize Carbon Emissions And Deforestation
The event, aimed at elevating environmental commitments, included representatives from various countries. President Jair Bolsonaro presented his goals to neutralize carbon emissions and halt deforestation. Bolsonaro stated that Brazil’s new target to achieve climate neutrality is by 2050.
In his speech, Bolsonaro claimed that the target set by the Federal Government to achieve climate neutrality – when the nation drastically reduces its carbon emissions and offsets the remaining emissions with environmental measures – has been brought forward by 10 years (previously, the target was 2060).

To curb illegal deforestation, the Federal Government announced that this will occur by 2030 – a date that was already mentioned in a letter addressed to American President Joe Biden last week. The Brazilian president said that if they achieve the goal of ending illegal deforestation by 2030, approximately 50% of carbon emissions would be reduced.
“It must be recognized that this will be a complex task. Command and control measures are part of the response. Despite the Government’s budget constraints, I have mandated the strengthening of environmental agencies, doubling the resources allocated for oversight actions,” says Bolsonaro during the event.
Bolsonaro also mentioned that Brazil needs financial support from other countries to preserve the Amazon. However, developed countries willing to invest in the Amazon have indicated they will only provide funds once the Federal Government publicizes accurate data on the reduction of deforestation in Brazil.
Previous Goals Of The Federal Government To Reduce Carbon Emissions And End Deforestation
Previously, the Federal Government stated that the goal was to reduce carbon emissions by 43% by 2030. However, at the end of last year, even with the absolute numbers presented during the Paris Agreement, the target to neutralize carbon emissions and deforestation was maintained.
These data are reviewed periodically, and if necessary, the percentages to neutralize carbon emissions and deforestation may be changed. If the Brazilian Federal Government had kept the target at 43%, carbon emissions would have increased.
Various Countries Announced Ambitious Goals To Reduce Carbon Emissions
With President Joe Biden’s announcement, the U.S. Federal Government disclosed its largest commitment against global warming. Biden stated that by the end of this decade, the United States would cut carbon emissions by 50% to 52%.
The EU – European Union – announced that it will reduce its carbon emissions by at least 55% by 2030. Canada, for its part, announced that its reduction will reach 40% to 45% within the next decade. The third-largest economy in the world, Japan, stated during the event that it will set a 46% target for carbon emissions reduction by 2030.
