New Reference Center in Salinas MG Reinforces the Quality of Cachaça and Supports the Legalization of Minas Cachaça Until 2028.
Minas Gerais has started the implementation of the third Reference Center focused on Cachaça Quality, this time in Salinas MG, with an investment of R$ 780 thousand.
Announced by the State Government through the Secretary of Agriculture and Fapemig, it is expected to be fully operational by 2028, with the aim of strengthening Minas Cachaça, broadening the Legalization of Cachaça, and providing technical support to producers from the state’s main producing region.
The new unit will be linked to the Federal Institute of Northern Minas Gerais (IFNMG) – Salinas campus.

The sugar-energy sector advances with agricultural technology, but agricultural productivity still raises concerns.

The eggshell that almost everyone throws away is made up of about 95% calcium carbonate and can help enrich the soil when crushed, slowly releasing nutrients and being reused in home gardens and vegetable patches.

This farm in the United States does not use sunlight, does not use soil, and produces 500 times more food per square meter than traditional agriculture: the secret lies in 42,000 LEDs, hydroponics, and a system that recycles even the heat from the lamps.

The water that almost everyone throws away after cooking potatoes carries nutrients released during the preparation and can be reused to help in the development of plants when used correctly at the base of gardens and pots, at no additional cost and without changing the routine.
The space will undergo maintenance, modernization of equipment, and validation of analytical methodologies, an essential step to ensure reliable reports.
Reference Center in Salinas MG Boosts Cachaça Quality
The new Reference Center is born with the mission of providing fundamental physicochemical analyses for the regularization of production.
In practice, the structure will allow the evaluation of items such as alcohol content, acidity, and the presence of chemical compounds.
These parameters are indispensable to ensure the Cachaça Quality and guarantee that the product meets legal standards.
Moreover, being located in Salinas MG represents an important logistical advantage.
Cost Reduction and Support for Cachaça Legalization
According to the Director of Marketing and Markets at Seapa-MG, Sandra Regina Carvalho dos Santos, the regionalization of the service makes life easier for the producer.
“Having a regional-level laboratory, like the one in Salinas, is important for the producer to have easier access to the necessary analyses so that they do not spend too much on logistics and transport.
Without the unit, tests often have to be carried out in other states, which greatly increases costs,” emphasized the Seapa representative.
Therefore, the structure not only improves Cachaça Quality but also directly contributes to the Legalization of Cachaça, making the process less burdensome and more accessible.
Investment of R$ 780 Thousand Strengthens Minas Cachaça
The investment of R$ 780 thousand will be used for the maintenance of existing equipment, acquisition of new devices, and validation of analytical methodologies.
The funds were made possible by the Secretary of State for Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (Seapa) in partnership with the Foundation for Support to Research in the State of Minas Gerais (Fapemig).
The forecast is that the reform and equipment purchasing phase will take about 12 months.
Thus, direct service to producers is expected to begin from 2028, when the Reference Center will be fully equipped to issue official reports.
Training Enhances Cachaça Quality in Salinas MG
More than just conducting laboratory tests, the new Reference Center will play an educational role.
“The Reference Center acts beyond service provision; there is a whole training effort for cachaça producers.
It is an initiative that aims to align academia and research with the productive sector.
While the laboratory does not start issuing reports, institutional communication actions and participation in industry events will take place.
The goal is to connect producers with the new structure right away.
“While the laboratory does not directly serve producers with report issuance, institutional communication actions will be carried out, mainly at industry events, to inform the community about the new center and its services.
The laboratory will also need cachaça samples to standardize its analyses, thus starting a partnership with producers early,” explained Sandra Regina.
Network of Reference Centers Strengthens Minas Cachaça
The laboratory in Salinas MG is the third established in the state.
Together, the three Reference Centers total nearly R$ 8 million in public investments aimed at laboratory accreditation for the sector.
This advancement demonstrates that Minas Gerais is betting on the professionalization of the production chain.
Therefore, by investing in Cachaça Quality and Legalization of Cachaça, the state strengthens the image of Minas Cachaça in the national and international markets.
Thus, the establishment of the unit in Salinas MG consolidates a strategy that combines tradition, science, and economic development, ensuring greater competitiveness for one of Minas’ most emblematic products.
