Meet the Liebherr Transport Truck That Transforms Mining With Renewable Fuels and a 1.6 MWh Battery, Powering Over 300 Homes. Revolution in Sustainable Mining.
On May 19, the hydrogen-powered transport truck prototype T 264, developed by Fortescue in collaboration with Liebherr, reached a significant milestone by operating for the first time using hydrogen. This advancement represents a crucial step towards the goal of both companies to develop and supply emission-free mining trucks, an agreement that was signed in June 2022.
A Revolutionary Prototype
The transport truck, nicknamed «Europa», is equipped with a 1.6 MWh battery (developed by Fortescue WAE) and 500-kilowatt fuel cells. This truck has the capacity to store over 380 kilograms of liquid hydrogen, allowing it to operate without emitting harmful gases. The incorporation of this technology is not only an advancement in sustainable mining but also underscores Fortescue’s commitment to the decarbonization of heavy industry.
Testing and Future of the Fleet
Fortescue plans to transport the Europa truck to its mining operations in the coming weeks, where it will undergo further testing and implementation on-site. The results of these tests will be critical in informing the future fleet of emission-free trucks that Fortescue is developing in collaboration with Liebherr. According to Dino Otranto, CEO of Fortescue Metals, these results will influence the final configuration of the fleet and the integration of heavy mobile support equipment from a variety of suppliers, most equipped with energy systems from Fortescue WAE.

Towards Emission-Free Mining
In June 2022, Fortescue and Liebherr established a partnership for the development and supply of emission-free mining trucks. Fortescue has already begun receiving the first T 264 diesel-electric trucks, which will be converted to zero-emission technology by the end of the decade. This initiative is part of Fortescue’s broader effort to lead the transition to sustainable mining operations, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of its activities.
Impact on Sustainability and Renewable Energy
The introduction of the Europa transport truck not only represents a technological advancement but also a tangible commitment to sustainability and innovation in renewable energies. This development is a promising sign for the mining industry and other industrial sectors seeking sustainable solutions to reduce carbon emissions. Fortescue and Liebherr are demonstrating that through collaboration and investment in advanced technology, ambitious sustainability goals can be achieved.
The success of the hydrogen-powered Liebherr T 264 transport truck prototype marks an important milestone in Fortescue’s mission to decarbonize the mining industry. As the Europa undergoes further testing, the results obtained will be crucial for the future of emission-free mining trucks. This advancement benefits not only the companies involved but also represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future for the industry as a whole.
