On May 19, the hydrogen-powered transport truck prototype T 264, developed by Fortescue in collaboration with Liebherr, reached a significant milestone by operating for the first time using hydrogen. This advancement represents a crucial step towards the goal of both companies to develop and supply emission-free mining trucks, an agreement that was signed in June 2022.
A Revolutionary Prototype
The transport truck, nicknamed «Europa», is equipped with a 1.6 MWh battery (developed by Fortescue WAE) and 500-kilowatt fuel cells. This truck has the capacity to store over 380 kilograms of liquid hydrogen, allowing it to operate without emitting harmful gases. The incorporation of this technology is not only an advancement in sustainable mining but also underscores Fortescue’s commitment to the decarbonization of heavy industry.
Testing and Future of the Fleet
Fortescue plans to transport the Europa truck to its mining operations in the coming weeks, where it will undergo further testing and implementation on-site.
