Rio Grande do Sul Municipality with Just Over 13 Thousand Inhabitants was the Only One in Brazil Recognized by the Best Tourism Villages Program, Among 270 Applications from 65 Countries, in the 2025 Edition
A large part of the Southern region of Brazil shows influence from Italian culture, but Antônio Prado, in Rio Grande do Sul, stands out by integrating the international ranking of UN Tourism, after evaluation among 270 applications from 65 countries, consolidating recent tourism relevance for a municipality with just over 13 thousand inhabitants.
Unprecedented International Recognition for Antônio Prado
The recognition occurred in the 2025 season, when Antônio Prado was the only Brazilian municipality included among the 52 awarded villages by the Best Tourism Villages program, a global initiative aimed at rural destinations with preserved cultural identity.
The UN Tourism survey evaluated small localities from 65 countries, considering technical criteria involving sustainability, social inclusion, cultural preservation, and innovation, which positioned the municipality in an internationally prominent position.

Criteria Evaluated by the Program
This was the fifth edition of the Best Tourism Villages program, which analyzes local public policies, environmental protection, and sustainable development strategies adopted by small municipalities around the world.
Antônio Prado was recognized for its protection of the Atlantic Forest, for implementing the Municipal Basic Sanitation Plan, for the work of the Municipal Climate Change Commission, and for promoting the use of solar energy.
According to the Head of the Technical Office of Iphan in the municipality, Carla Chilanti Pinheiro, the recognition is linked to the preserved historical heritage, which supports the tourism potential based on architecture, the Talian language, and ways of life.
Preserved Italian Influence in the City
Founded in 1886, Antônio Prado retains a strong Italian influence and has the largest architectural collection from immigration in the country, with 47 to 48 buildings listed by the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage Iphan.
Wood and stone houses, flowered balconies, and European features compose the urban landscape, reflecting preserved cultural practices over generations of descendants of Italian immigrants. These elements reinforce local identity.
