Matt Deitke’s Story Reveals Unprecedented Struggle for Artificial Intelligence Talents, with Figures that Rival Sports Signings and Show How Far Big Techs Are Willing to Go
An eye-to-eye meeting changed the course of a career and exposed a new reality of the technology market. At 24 years old, artificial intelligence researcher Matt Deitke entered a meeting as just another promising talent. However, he left with one of the largest offers ever made to an AI scientist.
The information was disclosed by “Zero Hora”, in a report published on August 26, 2025, with investigation in Silicon Valley. According to the report, Deitke agreed to join the artificial intelligence core at Meta after Mark Zuckerberg doubled the initial proposal. The contract reached US$ 250 million (R$ 1.36 billion).
In this context, the episode goes beyond a significant hiring. It symbolizes, above all, the billion-dollar war for AI talents at a critical moment in the race for so-called artificial superintelligence.

Who is Matt Deitke and Why Has He Become So Sought After
Before catching the attention of big techs, Matt Deitke was already standing out in academia. He started a PhD at University of Washington, but decided to leave the traditional path. Instead, he began focusing on applied research.
This way, he joined the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) in Seattle, created by Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft. In this environment, Deitke led the development of Molmo, a multimodal chatbot capable of interpreting text, image, and audio.
The project gained international recognition. In 2022, Molmo received an award at NeurIPS, one of the largest artificial intelligence conferences in the world. As a result, Deitke’s name began to circulate among experts and investors.
Additionally, in November 2024, he founded the startup Vercept, focused on autonomous AI agents. Despite having only 10 employees, the company quickly attracted attention. Investors like Eric Schmidt and Jeff Dean backed the project.
As a result, in early 2025, Vercept raised US$ 16 million in a funding round. This background explains why Deitke became a strategic asset in Silicon Valley.
The Negotiation with Meta and the Proposal That Changed Everything
The engagement with Meta began in early 2025. In the first conversation, Zuckerberg offered US$ 125 million (R$ 680 million) for Deitke to join the so-called All-Star Superintelligence Laboratory.
The researcher declined. He feared losing the freedom to lead his own startup. Nevertheless, the refusal did not end Meta’s interest. On the contrary, it increased the stakes.
Shortly after, Zuckerberg presented a new proposal. This time, the amount reached US$ 250 million, distributed over four years. The contract also involved up to US$ 100 million paid in the first year.
Faced with the offer, Deitke consulted friends and close investors. After these discussions, he accepted the agreement. The decision placed him among the highest-paid professionals in technology history.
By comparison, Neymar was transferred from Barcelona to PSG in 2017 for US$ 257 million. The amount is practically the same as what Meta decided to invest in a single scientist.
What Is at Stake in the Race for Artificial Superintelligence
Deitke’s hiring is part of a larger strategy. Meta has already allocated over US$ 1 billion (R$ 5.4 billion) to the laboratory that seeks to develop systems capable of surpassing human performance in various areas.
At the same time, competitors like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and xAI are engaged in similar battles. All are offering increasingly aggressive packages to attract the best minds.
In this scenario, executives are already comparing the AI market to a “market for athletes.” Scientists are now determining who leads or falls behind in the global technological race.
In July 2025, Zuckerberg summarized this perspective by stating that superintelligence could accelerate the progress of humanity. According to him, these technologies could also usher in a new era of personal empowerment.
Therefore, the contract with Deitke represents more than impressive figures. It shows how far big techs are willing to go to dominate the next frontier of technology.
