According to the Department of State, the Trump administration decided to freeze immigrant visas for 75 countries, including Brazil. The central argument involves the social cost of these immigrants to the American public system.
According to the official statement, Washington wants to prevent the entry of foreigners who may become a financial burden on the country. The government claims that many immigrants end up using social benefits at levels considered “unacceptable”.
Moreover, the Trump administration aims to reassess current criteria for legal immigration. For this reason, the freeze has no defined end date.
Although the government has not yet released the complete official list, countries such as Iran, Russia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, and Thailand also appear in the memorandum obtained by the press.
Potential Impacts for Seniors and Overweight Individuals
The internal document reveals another sensitive point. The U.S. government is considering additional restrictions for older individuals and those with obesity. According to the Associated Press, this guideline had been discussed since November.
The justification involves costs related to public health and work capacity. However, authorities have not yet detailed how these restrictions would be applied in practice.
Meanwhile, experts warn that the measure could directly affect processes such as the EB-2 NIW visa, which is highly sought after by qualified professionals.
New Immigration Strategy Reinforces Anti-Immigration Policy
The suspension of visas for Brazilians is part of a new defense and foreign policy strategy, published by the Trump administration in December 2025. The document outlines increased control over legal and illegal immigration.
Analysts believe that 2026 will mark an intensification of these policies. They argue that Trump aims to drastically reduce the migratory flow through formal channels.
“He is moving to deactivate part of the legal immigration system in the United States,” stated Shev Dalal-Dheini, director of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
For now, the Department of State claims that the measure is temporary. Still, the scenario creates uncertainty for thousands of Brazilians who planned to immigrate legally.
