Even Though It Seems Harmless, Bathing Cats Should Be Done Only in Extreme Cases, as Felines Clean Themselves and Can Suffer from Trauma, Infections, and Stress
Although it seems like a caring gesture, giving baths to cats can be harmful to their health and well-being, as explained by veterinarian Carolina Vianna Leite Otero in an interview with Diário do Litoral. According to her, the practice should only occur in specific situations and with extra caution.
Cats are known for their hygiene habits and spend up to 30% of their time grooming themselves, which helps keep their coat clean and odor-free. The need for a bath only arises when the animal is dirty from contact with toxic substances, such as grease, feces, or urine, or in cases of dermatological diseases.
The veterinarian highlights that bathing should not be routine, even for cats accustomed to it since they were kittens. The stress caused can lead to severe side effects, especially in elderly or very young animals.

When to Avoid Bathing Your Cat
Unvaccinated kittens have immature immune systems and are at greater risk when exposed to water and chemicals. Additionally, stressed or aggressive cats may react negatively to bathing, creating risks for both the animal and the owner.
Heart and behavioral problems are also important warnings to avoid bathing. In these cases, it’s best to seek other forms of hygiene, such as pet-specific wet wipes.
Even if some owners try to acclimate their cats to water from an early age, the procedure should always respect the animal’s temperament and health conditions.
Necessary Care for a Safe Bath
If there is a veterinary recommendation for bathing, it is essential to choose a calm environment free of noise that does not scare the animal. It is also crucial to use products specifically for felines, avoiding shampoos for humans or dogs, which can cause allergies or irritations.
After the bath, drying should be done with a towel and a warm hairdryer, being careful not to frighten the cat. The use of very hot or noisy dryers can further compromise the experience.
Additionally, keeping the litter box clean and promoting daily play helps the feline maintain emotional and physical balance, reducing the need for baths.
In this video, Alexandre Rossi, an animal behavior specialist and veterinarian, discusses when bathing is indicated for cats.
Cats Communicate Through Subtle Gestures
According to research from USP, cats use body signals to express emotions, such as trust, fear, or affection. A common example is when the animal blinks slowly: this may indicate affection and relaxation.
Other behaviors, like ears pinned back or a low tail, also signal discomfort or alertness. Therefore, understanding a cat’s body language is essential for knowing when they are or are not prepared for certain interactions.
Observing these signals helps reduce stress and improves the relationship with the animal, in addition to strengthening the bond between owner and pet.
