Drivers Can Request Refund for Canceled Fines. With a Total Exceeding R$ 30 Million, It Is Essential to Act Quickly.
Did you know that you might be leaving money on the table? This is the reality for thousands of drivers who may not be aware that they have the right to a refund for fines canceled by the courts. This is the time to act and recover what is rightfully yours!
How It All Started
In a court settlement reached in 1999, the Public Prosecution Office of RN and the state government annulled approximately 50,000 fines that had been improperly imposed between 1996 and 1998.
These fines were declared null, and now, the State Department of Traffic of Rio Grande do Norte (Detran-RN) is calling on affected drivers to request the return of the amounts paid.

Who Is Entitled to a Refund?
Not all drivers know they are entitled to a refund, but the criteria are clear and specific. According to the notice published by Detran-RN, entitled to a refund are:
- Drivers fined between December 1996 and May 1998, whose notifications were not properly sent with acknowledgment of receipt.
- Fines imposed from May 22, 1998, that did not respect the 30-day period between the issuance of the infraction and notification, according to the Brazilian Traffic Code.
- Fines resulting from speed bumps, between December 1996 and July 1998, that did not follow required signaling standards.
- Infractions recorded by photo sensors in the municipality of Natal/RN until June 2000, when the equipment had not yet been properly calibrated by INMETRO.
How to Request a Refund?
If you meet the criteria, don’t waste time! The procedure is simple, but it must be done exclusively online, directly on the Detran-RN portal. The request must be submitted within 90 days after the publication of the notice, which occurred on September 2, 2024.
For this, you will need the following documents:
- Personal documents (or company documents, in the case of a legal entity);
- Proof of residence;
- Bank details;
- Death certificate and identification of heirs, in the case of deceased drivers.
After submission, Detran-RN will screen the requests within 90 days. Payments are expected to occur between March 1 and May 31, 2025.
How Much Can You Receive from Detran?
According to updated data from 2022, the total amount of canceled fines exceeds R$ 30 million. However, drivers will only receive 60% of the originally paid amount, as provided in the court agreement. Even so, it is a significant amount that should not be ignored.
The Importance of Acting Fast
Time is running out! If you do not act within the deadline, you may lose the right to a refund. Don’t put off what can be done now.
Additionally, it is important to carefully check if you are indeed eligible for the refund and if all necessary documents are in order. Detran-RN offers support channels, including the Ombudsman, which can be accessed via WhatsApp at (84) 3232-1219.
