Conflict Between Stellantis And Italian Government Calls Into Question Future Of Jeep And Fiat Brands In Europe. Learn More!

Stellantis, the company responsible for the Jeep and Fiat brands, is facing a turbulent moment due to a possible agreement between the Italian government and Chinese companies for production in Europe. Stellantis’ refusal to increase production in Italy has led the government to consider the entry of Chinese companies BYD and Chery into the European market, raising concern within the company, according to the website Garagem 360.

The Italian government is looking to increase vehicle production in the country, pressuring Stellantis to expand its output to 1 million vehicles, instead of the current 750,000. In light of Stellantis’ refusal, the government has begun negotiations with Chinese companies, worrying the automaker.

Possibility Of Factory Closures In Europe

Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, has threatened to close factories in Italy if Chinese production is authorized. He warned that the entry of Chinese companies into Europe could lead to a reduction in Stellantis’ market share, even with efforts to increase productivity.

Rumors about the possible exit of Stellantis from Italy have emerged, raising criticisms in the country. Tavares stated that these are fake news and that the company is investing more than 5 billion euros in the country, with plans to launch 15 new models and build a battery gigafactory.

Job Cuts And Possible Strike In Europe

Despite the investments, Stellantis plans to cut over 3,700 jobs in Europe, which has raised concerns and strike alerts from the metalworkers’ union.

Stellantis is not the only company questioning the entry of Chinese firms into Europe. The CEO of Renault proposed a plan to protect Europe from what he referred to as “Chinese EV Attack”, highlighting the European automotive industry’s concern over Chinese competition.
