BYD Announces New High-Range Battery for Buses in the UK. New Set Offers 640 Km Range and Is 11 Times Larger than the Dolphin Mini.
The new generation of BYD’s Blade LFP batteries has not yet hit the market, but that hasn’t stopped the Chinese manufacturer from launching a high-range battery that is attracting attention. With 532 kWh and a range of 640 km, this new battery, despite using traditional technology, promises to revolutionize the sector. The system, which is 11 times larger than that of the Dolphin Mini, is part of BYD’s latest investment in the UK, positioning the company at the forefront of innovation in sustainable transport.
New BYD Battery with More Range Will Be Used in Buses
The new double-decker bus from BYD, named B11, was launched on May 21 at the London Bus Museum, and is set to challenge the famous New Routemaster in London.
Apart from the previously mentioned data, the battery set 11 times larger than that of the Dolphin Mini will have a consumption rate of 1.4 km per kWh and a usable capacity of 457 kWh. Additionally, the battery is embedded in the chassis, which is said to reduce its weight by 8%, increase its range, and provide more space for passengers.

Three Chinese brands have already secured their presence in Brazil in 2026 and promise to heat up the competition with SUVs, technology, a network of stores, and even cars that can be maneuvered by remote control.
In addition to the new high-range battery, there are two wheel electric motors, each with 203 hp of power. It is possible to connect two chargers to the bus simultaneously, aiming to increase the charging speed, which is done from 0 to 100% in two hours.
It is worth mentioning that the average range of a bus in the English capital is 160 km to 320 km, making the 640 km range with the new BYD battery more than sufficient for being the new bus in the city.

The replacement of buses is expected because the Go-Ahead group, which operates as Transport for London, is close to placing an order for 100 new buses, and these are likely to be BYD’s, largely due to their price.
According to The Sunday Times, the cost of such a vehicle is 400,000 euros, about 100,000 euros cheaper than most of its competitors sold there. Although its production takes place in China, BYD stated that 34% of the vehicle’s components, which features the new high-range battery 11 times larger than that of the Dolphin Mini, are of European origin.
It is worth mentioning that BYD has been selling its buses in the UK to producer Alexander Dennis for 11 years and has sold 1,500 units before the partnership ended. Its dimensions are 10.9 m in length, 5.44 m in wheelbase, 2.55 m in width, and 4.3 m in height. The maximum capacity is 90 passengers, depending on the configuration used. Smaller one-story versions of the vehicle for regions in the interior of the country are already being developed.
BYD Will Launch 2nd Generation of Its High-Range Battery
In addition to this new high-range battery that is 11 times larger than that of the Dolphin Mini, which equips the bus, BYD announces the arrival of the second generation of the Blade battery, with a planned launch for August of this year.
The new technology promises to be a significant step forward with advancements in range, performance, and cost. The revelation was recently made by BYD’s CEO, Wang Chuanfu, who spoke about the new development for the first time during a financial results communication meeting regarding BYD currently developing a second-generation Blade battery system.
