Chinese Companies Show Strong Interest In Participating In The Santos-Guarujá Tunnel Auction, Unique Work In Latin America That Could Move Up To R$ 6 Billion
Chinese companies are eyeing a large infrastructure project in Brazil. During President Lula’s official visit to China, the Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, stated that Chinese companies are interested in participating in the auction for the Santos-Guarujá Tunnel.
The auction is scheduled for August and could move up to R$ 6 billion. According to Costa Filho, after meetings with Chinese businessmen, there were indications that several companies are studying forming consortia to compete for the construction of the underwater tunnel.
Brazilian Delegation Sees Positive Sign
The minister highlighted that large construction companies from China are excited about the project. “In the next 30 days, a group of companies will come to Brazil to actively participate in the formation of consortia“, he said.

Santos-Guarujá: Unique Work In Latin America
The Santos-Guarujá Tunnel will be the first underwater tunnel in Latin America. It will have a length of 870 meters and a depth of 21 meters. The work will be the largest investment of the New PAC in the transportation sector.
The government expects that the project will help improve traffic in the port area and boost the local economy. The participation of international companies, such as the Chinese ones, could help make the work feasible within the timeline and with cutting-edge technology.
Other Agreements During The Trip
During the visit to China, agreements were also made in other areas. One of them provides for R$ 5 billion in investments in Brazil’s public ports.
Another highlight was the signing of a memorandum with the Civil Aviation University of China. The partnership aims to cooperate in the research of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and improve the management of Brazilian airports.
