Northeast Breaks Record for Wind and Solar Energy Generation Last Month
Brazil is one of the great global examples when it comes to renewable energy, such as wind and solar power. The energy matrix of Brazil is the cleanest among the world’s major economies. In addition to that, the country leads the South American ranking in wind power generation capacity. With this, the federal government celebrates ten records of energy production from renewable sources in the northeast, according to information released by the National Electric System Operator (ONS).
According to ONS, there were four records for average wind energy generation and four for instantaneous generation (peak), as well as two records for solar photovoltaic generation. Additionally, the government celebrated the figure recorded on July 22, when wind energy was able to supply the northeast region at 102% for 24 hours a day. On that day, the winds generated 11,399 MW.

Minister of Mines and Energy Highlights the Importance of Clean Energy
Bento Albuquerque, Minister of Mines and Energy, stated in a recent interview that Brazil needs to increase the supply of other clean energy sources. The government’s idea is to reduce the reliance on hydropower, which can become overloaded during dry periods.

Brazilian scientists are simultaneously advancing two research projects on clean hydrogen and driving solutions that could transform the energy matrix, enhance industrial competitiveness, and accelerate large-scale emission reduction targets.

Advancement in renewable energy: A R$ 150 million project launched by Petrobras and Finep aims to create state-of-the-art electrolyzers for green hydrogen, strengthening national research and preparing Brazil to compete in a billion-dollar energy market.

Illiterate or semi-literate grandmothers were trained to repair solar systems, open rural workshops, and light up homes that still depended on kerosene.

The world has bet on green hydrogen as the fuel of the future, but now faces the side effect: producing 1 kilogram requires about 9 liters of ultrapure water, and the largest projects on the planet are precisely in the driest regions of the Earth, where water is already scarce for people.
During the National Wind Forum, the Minister emphasized the importance of Wind Energy in the Brazilian energy matrix. “The potential of wind is almost four times greater than our entire current electric matrix. During wind seasons, wind energy has been setting record after record, almost supplying 100% of the Northeast for an entire day,” highlighted the minister.
Hydropower plants are a source of clean and renewable energy, just like wind energy; however, they depend on the water volume in the reservoirs. When the volume drops, it is necessary to resort to thermal plants, where the cost of energy production is higher.
