Strategic Project by Alberto Fernández Will Carry Natural Gas from Vaca Muerta to Uruguaiana, in Rio Grande do Sul
The Brazilian government was informed, through contacts with the team of newly elected Argentine president, Javier Milei, that there is interest in maintaining a crucial project for Alberto Fernández’s administration: the construction of a pipeline to transport natural gas from the Vaca Muerta mega-reserve to Uruguaiana, in Rio Grande do Sul.
This message was communicated to the Brazilian embassy in Buenos Aires by Milei’s team, in conversations with Diana Mondino, who is tipped to take over the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The pipeline is in the bidding phase by the Argentine government and, if the schedule is followed, the project could be completed between late 2024 and early 2025.
This venture would allow for the transportation of a similar amount of gas to Uruguaiana compared to the Brazil-Bolivia Pipeline, but at lower prices. From Uruguaiana, the gas could be transported to São Paulo, supplying the industry in the Southeast region. Fernández was seeking financing from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) for the acquisition of the steel pipes necessary for the civil works, and the project is considered essential for energy integration between the two main countries in Mercosur.
