Government Companies Amazul and Nuclep Sign Contract for Construction of Nuclear Reactor to Equip the Navy’s Prosub Program Nuclear Submarine
Amazul (Amazônia Azul Tecnologias de Defesa S.A.) and Nuclep (Nuclebrás Equipamentos Pesados S.A.) signed, last Friday (10/11), the contract for the construction of part of the prototype of the nuclear reactor being developed by the Brazilian Navy.
The equipment is part of the propulsion system of the fifth and final submarine (SN-BR) of the Brazilian Navy’s Prosub program, which is being built at the ICN shipyard in Itaguaí. At ICN, the second submarine has a hull closure ceremony.
The contract signed between the parties provides for the manufacturing, assembly, and supply of the vessel (cylinder) and internal containment structures, as well as the manufacture of the primary shielding tank of the so-called Labgene (Nuclear Power Generation Laboratory).

The future of computers may change sooner than expected: Amazon bets on commercial quantum computing within seven years, while qubits, the Ocelot chip, AI, and scientific simulations take center stage in the new race among big techs.
The reactor is being built as a prototype, at full scale, and the implementation of Labgene will allow for the simulation, under ideal safety conditions, of the reactor operation and its various electronic systems before its installation on the submarine.
Developed at the Navy Technological Center in São Paulo (CTMSP), in the municipality of Iperó, the nuclear reactor can perform both functions, that of propelling the ship and generating electricity to illuminate entire cities.
State-owned Companies in Partnership
The CEO of Amazul, Antonio Carlos Soares Guerreiro, emphasized the emergence of a strategic partnership with synergistic potential between the two state-owned companies. “On one hand, Amazul dedicated to engineering projects in various knowledge areas, and on the other, Nuclep with enormous industrial capacity,” he commented.
Nuclep is a Brazilian state-owned company linked to the Ministry of Mines and Energy. The NUCLEP is a basic industry producing custom capital goods, preferably in the heavy boiler area.
Amazônia Azul Tecnologias de Defesa S.A., or simply Amazul, is a public company created by the Brazilian government with the mandate to develop technologies for the Brazilian Nuclear Program and the national navy’s nuclear sector.
