Engineer Develops Portable Solar Panel Capable Of Generating Energy To Charge Smartphones, Tablets, Smartwatches And More.
Combining the pleasure of enjoying nature with the practicality and functionality of smartphones and gadgets is the dream scenario for those who love great adventures without giving up good old technology. However, batteries with low durability and the lack of spots to recharge devices between trees and waterfalls have always been a challenge. With this in mind, a company developed SunUp, a portable and flexible solar panel that allows charging devices while tackling a trail or hike, attached directly to your backpack.
Solar Energy Project Brings Efficiency And Durability

According to the engineer responsible for the development of the portable solar panel, Bradley Brister, the project’s intent was to find a middle ground between rigid panels, which generate excellent efficiency but are very fragile, and flexible ones, which are strong but less efficient.

For Brister, the purpose of his solar energy project is to provide a compromise between the two terms, combining the efficiency benefits of rigid panels with the flexibility advantages of thin-film ones. To achieve this middle ground, the portable solar panel was created with small panels connected by conductive metal hinges.
Portable Solar Panel Originates As College Project

The adaptability of the product is one of its differentiators; although it was developed to be used on a backpack, the solar-powered equipment can also be adapted to different surfaces, such as that of a canoe, for example.
Manufactured with the support of The North Face, a leader in outdoor equipment, SunUp originated as a college project; however, the engineer ended up as a finalist in the James Dyson Awards, a competition that honors design and engineering initiatives from students worldwide.
Mini Solar Energy Kit
In addition to this innovation from Engineer Bradley Brister, Banggood offers various technologies, including a solar kit equipped with a cable specifically for charging smartphones and already includes two lamps.
The equipment comes with a solar panel that delivers a power of 3.5 W and a voltage of 5 V. Regarding size, the panel of the kit measures 200*135*17 mm, with a power line length of 5 meters.
