A letter requesting urgent measures for the health of Port of Santos workers due to the pandemic of the new coronavirus was sent to the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcisio Gomes de Freitas, by the Stevedores’ Union (Sindestiva) of Santos, São Vicente, Guarujá, and Cubatão.

There would be a meeting last Monday (23) via the Union, where a possible strike by the working class, interrupting activities at the Port of Santos for thirty days as a preventive measure against contamination by Covid-19, would be discussed, as port operations have been proceeding normally.
Last Friday, March 20, presidents of the unions at the Port of Santos, the Labor Management Body (Ogmo), and representatives from the Santos City Hall and the Port Authority met to discuss the measures to be taken during the pandemic.
At the meeting, representatives of the union advocated for measures to be taken for the health of the workers and expressed concern regarding temporary workers, who earn remuneration based on work performed and will have no source of income during the crisis period due to quarantine at the Port of Santos.
According to the Santos Port Authority (SPA), the Port Authority of Santos informs that all cargo handling operations in ships, trucks, and trains have been maintained, but activities are following the standards established by health authorities to ensure greater protection for workers during the coronavirus pandemic, whether port workers, company employees, truck drivers, and other collaborators.
Diverse actions to prevent the spread of the pandemic have been taken by the Port Authority, terminals, and operators to adapt the entrance and exit gates, as well as transport between port shores, with hygiene and security systems, following the norms established by the Ministry of Health and Anvisa, based on guidelines from the World Health Organization.
