The Highest Bridge In The World Cost R$ 866 Million
Also known as Duge Bridge, its construction was completed in 2016. It is the first bridge in the world to surpass the 500-meter height barrier. In addition to its record height, the crossing is not the shortest, spanning 720 meters over the Beipan River, between the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou, in southwestern China.

The Construction Process Of The Duge Bridge
The bridge, with a height equivalent to a 200-story building, is one of three bridges in the Bijie-Duge section of the Hangzhou-Ruili expressway, a road that connects the cities of Hangzhou in Zhejiang province and Ruili in the Dehong Autonomous Region, Yunnan province.
As it was built over a steep canyon with complicated geological conditions, the Duge Bridge created the need for new technologies and construction methods.
The company responsible for the construction of the bridge also completed a research project for the Ministry of Transport of China during its construction.
Furthermore, they received several mentions for the construction project, including four patents for the invention of new world-leading technologies, seven patents for new utility models, a Gold Medal from Gustav Lindenthal, considered the Nobel Prize in the field of bridge construction, and the highest Science and Technology Award from the China Transportation and Highway Society.
China Sets A New Record With Its New 625-Meter Bridge
If the more than 500 meters of the Duge Bridge already seem daunting, the Chinese are thinking bigger. Located in the Great Huajiang Canyon, with a vertical height of 625 meters from the bridge deck to the water surface, the expectation is that the bridge over the Great Huajiang Canyon will become the highest bridge in the world upon its completion in 2025. This will reduce the travel time through the canyon from about an hour to just one minute.
Additionally, China’s engineers are also working on plans for the Yongchang Lancangjiang Bridge in Yunnan. The project will have a height of 610 meters and will be completed later, in 2027.
China also boasts the largest bridge on the planet, which is the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge, a viaduct 164.8 kilometers long that carries high-speed trains between Beijing and Shanghai.
