Explosions and Fire at Petrobras President Getúlio Vargas Refinery (Repar) Scares Residents of Araucária and Even Curitiba

Flash, fire, and the sound of explosions at Petrobras President Getúlio Vargas Refinery (Repar) caused fear among nearby residents and also in distant neighborhoods from the refinery. The episode occurred on the night of Thursday, November 21, and in the early hours of Friday, November 22. Petrobras Begins Sale Process for RNEST, RLAM, REPAR, and REFAP Refineries.

Repar is located in the metropolitan area of Curitiba and usually has flares lit for the burning of gas waste from the production system.

Nearby residents reported hearing a loud noise, like that of a jet engine, followed by a flash in the sky. The flames started at the end of Thursday afternoon and only subsided around 4 a.m. on Friday.

On the night from Thursday to Friday, the flames were much larger than usual. Some people witnessed the flash in neighborhoods quite far away, including in Curitiba, such as Água Verde, Umbará, and even Campina do Siqueira.

Many calls were made by various people to the Fire Department, reporting a fire at Repar. However, that was not quite the case.

According to Repar, the flash was generated due to the refinery’s burn-off safety system, which is considered normal.

On Thursday night, however, the chimney was undergoing maintenance, which is why the flames were stronger, but the unit operates normally.

In September, another case of flames at Repar frightened the population. At that time, a gas compressor at Repar stopped working, and therefore more gas was released for burning in the chimneys as a safety measure.

During the same period, another fire occurred at another Petrobras refinery, Revap, located in São Paulo. The incident happened in the tank storage reservoir that holds products used in asphalt and fuel oil preparation.
