In 2019, A Chinese Boy Moved The World By Carrying His Disabled Friend On His Back For Six Years So He Could Study, Becoming A Global Symbol Of Empathy.

In 2019, a story from China touched the planet by showing that true human greatness can be found in the simplest gestures. The case, revealed by outlets such as India Today, People’s Daily, China Daily, and South China Morning Post, reported the moving journey of Xie Xu, a young student from Jiangsu province, who carried his friend Zhang Ze, who had a degenerative muscle condition that prevented him from walking, on his back daily for six years.

The story, quickly reproduced by BBC News and the Huffington Post, gained global attention as a symbol of solidarity, friendship, and perseverance in the face of adversity.

A Gesture Of Friendship That Transcended Time And Inspired The World

The episode took place in Xuzhou, a city in eastern China, a region known for its harsh weather and the long distances between villages and schools. Zhang Ze suffered from muscular dystrophy, a progressive disease that weakens muscles and impairs mobility.

Faced with a lack of accessible transportation and his friend’s desire to continue studying, Xie, then just 12 years old, decided to take on the task of carrying him to Daxu Secondary School every day. The journey, approximately one and a half kilometers, was made under rain, under the scorching sun, or in the biting cold of the Chinese winter.

The commitment began as a simple act of help but quickly became an essential part of the two students’ routine. For six consecutive years, Xie fulfilled his promise without missing a single day. He carried Zhang on his back from home to the classroom, accompanied him during breaks, helped him eat, and then took him back home.

The physical effort was enormous, but the student never complained. Teachers and classmates reported to the media that Xie always kept the same smile and that his dedication transformed the entire school into an example of empathy.

Education, Discipline, And Daily Overcoming

The two young men were always recognized for their excellent academic performance. According to People’s Daily Online, both were among the best students in the school. The school principal stated in an interview that he had never seen anything like it: “Xie was never late, never absent, and never showed fatigue.

He always said he was not just helping a friend, but learning to be a better person.” The attitude caught the attention of the Chinese Ministry of Education, which honored the two young men for promoting values such as companionship, inclusion, and equality in the school environment.

Even facing an exhausting routine, Xie never stopped studying and maintained excellent grades until the end of high school. He believed that the effort was not a sacrifice, but an opportunity to learn about responsibility and purpose.

Zhang, for his part, credited his friend not only with the chance to attend classes but also with the strength to continue fighting against the limitations imposed by the disease. “Without him, I would have given up a long time ago,” Zhang declared in an interview with China Daily.

From Small Town To Global Recognition

The story of the two friends went viral on social media and quickly reached the world. Within days, newspapers from Europe, America, and Asia published the story with headlines praising the altruistic spirit of the Chinese boy. In India Today, the case was described as “a powerful reminder that empathy still exists even among younger generations.”

The Huffington Post ranked the friendship between Xie and Zhang as one of the most inspiring stories of the decade.

The international impact was so great that universities and educational institutions in China began to use the case as an example in lectures and programs focused on coexistence and solidarity among students.

The recognition also came from the public. Thousands of people sent messages to the young men, praising the gesture and calling for more government support for people with disabilities in the country. On Chinese social media, the hashtag with the names of the two trended among the most discussed topics of the month, even surpassing political issues.

The episode showed that the story of a small school in the countryside could touch hearts anywhere in the world.

The Importance Of Empathy And School Inclusion

Xie’s gesture brought to light an essential discussion about inclusion and accessibility in schools in China and other developing countries.

Subsequent reports pointed out that millions of children with disabilities in rural areas still face difficulties accessing educational institutions due to a lack of transportation or adequate infrastructure.

The case of the two friends was used as an argument to strengthen public policies on accessibility and inspired volunteer programs in several Chinese cities.

Experts in psychology and education analyzed Xie’s actions as an example of moral development and social empathy. He not only offered physical help but also gave his friend a sense of belonging and equality. The gesture showed that coexistence and solidarity are fundamental pillars of a more humane and balanced society.

A Legacy That Continues To Inspire

More than four years after the story gained attention, the case of Xie Xu and Zhang Ze is still remembered as a symbol of friendship that transcends physical and social limitations.

The two took different paths after high school, but they continue to be remembered as examples of companionship and altruism. In 2023, the story resurfaced on Chinese social media when internet users revived it in campaigns raising awareness about empathy and disability.

The story of these young men shows that true heroism does not depend on fame, strength, or wealth. It manifests in the silent gestures and choices we make every day.

The simple act of carrying someone can mean much more than physical support; it can represent the power of a friendship capable of transforming lives and inspiring entire generations.

Como diz a Bíblia: Há amigo mais chegado do que irmão. Esse é o exemplo vivo.
