The warning was issued by Tânia Constantino, general director of Microsoft Brazil, and Fábio Coelho, president of Google Brazil, during a panel at the Brazil Conference — an annual event organized by students from Harvard University and MIT.

“Today, there are about 500 thousand open positions in Brazil in technological areas that we cannot fill. This is not an exclusive problem of Microsoft or Google. Large companies from various sectors, such as Itaú, Nubank, iFood, also face this difficulty,” said Tânia, stressing the magnitude of the problem and the urgent need for changes in the educational landscape.

Fábio Coelho, for his part, pointed out the importance of robust investment in education in the areas of STEAM — an English acronym that encompasses Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

“In Brazil, we train about 280 thousand people annually in these careers. In the United States, this number is 850 thousand, and in China, about 3 million. This difference is a direct reflection of the educational strategies adopted in each country. We urgently need to think about how to bridge this gap,” Coelho remarked.
