In the report, Eletrobras stated that the company’s board of directors approved the granting of an advance for future capital increase (Afac) of the subsidiary Eletronuclear, in an operation aimed at accelerating measures for the resumption of the works of the Angra 3 Nuclear Power Plant.
According to the notice presented to the market last Friday, the operation of the utility with its nuclear generation subsidiary will involve 1.052 billion reais in 2020 and 2.447 billion reais in 2021.
Nuclear Power Plant: Angra 1, Angra 2, and Angra 3
The first Brazilian nuclear power plant – Angra 1 began operations in 1985, while Angra 2 started commercial operations in 2001. The works of the Angra 3 Nuclear Power Plant began in the 1980s but have been halted since 2015.
The Angra 3 Nuclear Power Plant will become the third plant of the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Nuclear Center (CNAAA). The expectation is that in commercial operation, the new unit will have a capacity of 1,405 megawatts, enough energy to supply the cities of Brasília and Belo Horizonte during the same period.
Government Approval for the Resumption of the Angra 3 Nuclear Power Plant Works
The resolution signed by Guedes suggests that the construction plan for the plant continues under the coordination of a new Interministerial Committee integrated by the Ministry of Economy, Institutional Security Office (GSI), and the Ministry of Mines and Energy. The act establishes a deadline of 180 days – extendable for an equal period from August 7, 2020 – for the committee to carry out new work.
Furthermore, the minister recommends that President Jair Bolsonaro assign the responsibility for the CPPI project to the CNPE.
The Angra 3 Nuclear Power Plant is an asset of Eletrobras and, according to Guedes’ act, the implementation of the model for enabling the continuity of the work will depend on the “approval of its competent decision-making instances.”
