Minister Alexandre Silveira Highlights Company Initiatives for a Sustainable Energy Matrix
During a visit to the Hydro Alunorte facilities, located in Barcarena, Pará, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, recognized the refinery’s effort and leadership in adopting practices for the decarbonization of its operations. Accompanied by local authorities, the minister explored Hydro Alunorte’s pioneering initiatives, reaffirming the company’s commitment to sustainability and green aluminum production.
A New Energy Era for Pará
Hydro Alunorte, considered the largest alumina refinery in the world, is at the center of a significant energy transformation. With the inauguration of the natural gas import terminal by New Fortress Energy, the company begins a revolutionary chapter, replacing heavy oil with natural gas in its operations. This move not only solidifies Hydro Alunorte’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions but also positions Pará as a leader in decarbonization in Brazil.
Investments and Positive Environmental Impacts
With an investment of R$1.3 billion, Hydro Alunorte becomes the first consumer of natural gas in the state, promoting an annual reduction of 700,000 tons of carbon. This project is a milestone in the company’s decarbonization initiatives and aligns with Hydro’s global goal of reducing its CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030.

Renewal and Energy Efficiency
The refinery not only leads in global energy efficiency but also advances toward neutralizing carbon emissions by 2050. The installation of a new electric boiler, the largest in the world, and investment in solar energy through two Hydro Rein projects, “Mendubim” and “Ventos de São Zacarias,” highlight Hydro Alunorte’s commitment to renewable energy sources. These initiatives, along with the exploration of new energy sources such as açaí biomass, exemplify the company’s journey toward a sustainable and responsible operation.
Minister Alexandre Silveira, while acknowledging Hydro Alunorte’s efforts, emphasized the importance of such projects for the Northern region of Brazil, highlighting the company’s vital role in the country’s energy transition. This acknowledgment reaffirms Hydro Alunorte’s position as a leader in sustainability and innovation in the Brazilian industrial sector, promoting not only energy efficiency but also contributing significantly to the circular economy and environmental protection.
