Intense explosions, smoke 10 kilometers high, and difficult access complicate searches on Mount Dukono, while authorities confirm deaths, disappearances, and non-compliance with safety alerts.

A strong eruption of Dukono volcano, on Halmahera island, Indonesia, caused the death of three mountaineers and left 10 others missing this Friday, May 8, 2026.

Local authorities confirmed that the victims were in an exclusion zone for tourists and visitors. The region had been closed after an increase in volcanic activity.

According to Erlichson Pasaribu, North Halmahera police chief, among the dead are two foreigners and one resident of Ternate island.

The information was released to Kompas TV channel, while teams were still trying to reach areas affected by the eruption.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency, BNPB, reported that five mountaineers were injured. Seven people managed to escape the volcanic area.

Intense volcanic activity complicates searches in Halmahera

According to Abdul Muhari, BNPB spokesperson, rescue teams remain in the mountainous area, even with increasing volcanic activity.

The rugged terrain hinders the teams’ progress. Vehicles can only reach part of the affected region, according to Erlichson Pasaribu.

From that point, movement must be done manually. Victims, once located, must be transported on stretchers.

New rumbles caused by the eruption were still heard during the operation. Therefore, each stage of the rescue requires caution.

Mount Dukono was already under elevated alert since December

Before the tragedy, monitoring agencies had already issued alerts about the risk on Mount Dukono.

Since December, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, PVMBG, recommended a minimum distance of four kilometers from the Malupang Warirang crater.

Dukono was also at the third highest level of the Indonesian volcanic alert system, which consists of four official levels.

According to Lana Saria, director of the Indonesian government’s Geological Agency, the early morning eruption was accompanied by a deafening roar.

A column of smoke reached about 10 kilometers above the volcano’s summit, increasing authorities’ concern.

Mountaineers ignored warning signs installed in the region

Despite the restrictions, the mountaineers entered the prohibited area.

Erlichson Pasaribu stated that warning signs had been installed around the volcanic region. The group, however, ignored the official warnings.

The incident reinforces the risk of approaching active volcanic areas, especially when there are active technical alerts and exclusion zones defined by specialists.

Searches continue in Halmahera under constant risk of new rumbles, intense smoke, and unstable terrain. How many more tragedies need to happen for volcanic alerts to be truly taken seriously?
