Toyota Surprises With The Corolla Axio, A Compact Sold In Japan For Only R$ 61,000 – Cheaper Than A Fiat Mobi! The Manufacturer Has Already Confirmed The End Of Production In October This Year.

If you think a Corolla has always been synonymous with a mid-size sedan and high prices, you are mistaken! There is a version that costs less than a new Fiat Mobi in Brazil. We are talking about the Corolla Axio, a compact model sold in Japan and other Asian markets since 2012.

But don’t get too excited. Toyota has already announced that it will discontinue the Corolla Axio in October this year. This means that this economical Corolla is running out of days. Want to understand why? Let’s go!

Corolla Axio: The Cheap Corolla We’ve Never Seen Here

The Corolla Axio is simpler because it was designed to be an affordable and economical car in Japan, with less technology and a more basic finish. It prioritizes cost-effectiveness, without many luxuries, to cater to an audience looking for a compact and efficient vehicle.

The Corolla family is much larger than we imagine. In Brazil, we have the sedan version and the Corolla Cross SUV, but in Japan, the Corolla Axio has been part of the lineup since 2006.

Unlike the mid-size sedan we know, the Axio is a compact adapted to Japan’s category laws, which favor smaller and more economical cars. It was launched in the E160 generation in 2012 and has a simpler look, focusing on efficiency and low cost.

And it doesn’t stop there: there’s even a station wagon version called Corolla Fielder, which harks back to the old wagon sold in Brazil in the 2000s. For those who like practical and affordable cars, the Axio and its Fielder variant would be great options… if they were available here.

How Much Does The Corolla Axio Cost?

Now, let’s get to the point: the price! The Corolla Axio starts at 1,639,600 yen (approximately R$ 61,460) for the base version, with front-wheel drive and manual transmission. That’s less than a new Fiat Mobi in Brazil, which starts at R$ 76,990.

If the buyer wants a version with all-wheel drive and CVT, the price rises to 1,913,000 yen (R$ 71,735) – even cheaper than a basic Mobi!

And the Corolla Fielder station wagon? That costs 1,786,400 yen (R$ 66,987), an impressive price for a practical and functional car.

Why Is Toyota Discontinuing The Axio?

If the car is cheap and efficient, why did Toyota decide to end it? Simple: the market has changed. In recent years, automakers have been focusing on larger, more sophisticated, and profitable cars. Compact sedans and popular hatchbacks are losing ground to SUVs and electrified models.

Production costs have risen, and selling cheap cars has become less profitable. That’s why Toyota decided to end Axio production and focus on models like the Yaris Cross, a compact SUV that will be manufactured in Brazil.

What To Expect From Toyota’s Future In Brazil?

The Brazilian market is also undergoing changes. At the end of 2023, Toyota discontinued the Yaris Sedan, and it seems that the Hatch may follow the same path.

The replacement? Yaris Cross, a compact SUV that will be produced in Sorocaba (SP) and will fill the space between the old top-tier versions of the Yaris and the entry-level versions of the Corolla sedan.

Abroad, the Yaris Cross is already sold with 1.5-liter aspirated engines producing 106 hp and a hybrid engine of up to 90 hp. Here in Brazil, the price is expected to range from R$ 130,000 to R$ 180,000, which may even force a price adjustment on the Corolla sedan to accommodate the new model.
